The Canadian pharmacy that I spoke with on the phone did REQUIRE a prescription. (They asked me to fax it to them.)

I spoke with my local MD and he said that he wouldn't have any concerns about the GERD medication that I was going to buy. (Prevacid)

However, he cautioned against purchasing any narcotics or ED drugs. In some States, seniors are encouraged to purchase drugs from Canada. New Mexico is one that comes to mind.

    Thank you, Leaving.

Those details give me more to work with. I appreciate your posting.

What's happening over here in the UK is several highly reputable companies from the high street are setting up on line and beating their own in store prices. You have to send the prescription to them by post, but do the rest online. At least you know you are getting top notch stuff but at the right price. Now, I must order some more Viagra too, you just reminded me. Oh I only take it to stop me rolling out of bed in my sleep! LOL ;)

Great information, Ballistic! I appreciate it.

How about strapped to the bed? Cheaper and no side effects ...

I don't get mine on line..too afraid of what I will get. I think if you belong to a senior group possibly they could offer some help . I too take plavix and it is expensive if you don't have prescription coverage..I go through a mail order service and save that way. It is one my insurance offers so I feel safe using it. It used to save me a lot more than it does now though..seems like they are raising their prices to almost what the local pharmacies are charging. I have to really shop around as I go in the gap towards the fall of the year and have to foot the entire bill myself.

You just have to take a day and call all the pharmacies and compare.

The good news is that Plavis is finally going generic in November this year..Yahoo!..that means you will be able to get the generic probably for $10. at your local discount store..compared to the $535. they now charge..

One good point about medicare is the slowly closing of the prescription gap means it will only be half price for us seniors that go in the gap this year..

The bad news is that many pharmacies have raised the price of these drug by at least 1/3 to 1/2 of their cost compared to last year..I am sure it was in anticipation of the closing of the gap..

Snoozy who trys to get generic if at all possible!

ps..At this time there is NO generic for Plavix! (At least in the states and Canada)

    Generic Availability

    • The generic drug name for Plavix is clopidogrel bisulfate. While generic clopidogrel is produced in some countries such as India, sales of the generic drug are blocked in the United States due to patent protection.

    Patent Protection

    • In June of 2007, a United States judge upheld the Plavix patent, blocking Canadian pharmaceutical company Apotex from producing generic clopidogrel. The U.S. patent protection for Plavix will not expire until November of 2011.

Well, Snoozy, you've done your homework - out of financial necessity! !

I take the equivalent of Plavix: Aggrenox. It is already available as generic, so I see online. The occasional headache is a nearly intolerable side effect.

The cost of Plavix is outrageous. Thanks for the detail you gave regarding your search and acquisition. They surely don't make it easy. Will AARP, for which I just signed up, help? Maybe that's only here in the USA ...

    Gratefully,

OK CC I looked up waht you are taking. And yes it is similar to plavix! The difference is that it is a vasodilator and Plavix isn't. What gets me on looking it up is I am also on a pill that dilates the blood vessels besides the plavis. The also recommend the Aggrenox for people that have had a stroke because of that...I also didn't see it being available as a generic but did say that you can take persantine and a aispirin 3 times a day and it is the same thing. Don't know th eprice of persantine tho. It may be cheaper, you could look into that.

If not for the fact that Plavix is going generic I think I would switch..

This is the info I found on the difference between the two...

I had 2 stents put in and I read they usually take you off the plavix after a while as it is only to prevent any clots from forming from rejection of the stent..but my Dr hasn't said anything about it as yet and it has been over two years..some Drs keep you on it.

    Snoozy..isn't this fun?...

ps..I wasn't too happy about reading this:

As of 2009, Aggrenox has not had any FDA issued drug alerts since its approval in 2001.

Since Plavix's FDA approval in November 1997, there have been two major FDA Drug Alerts. In April 2005, the FDA issued a warning for the risk of developing a rare blood disease called TTP (thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura) which essentially causes tiny blood clots to develop throughout the body. Ironically, the development of that condition, the clotting, is what the drug is supposed to prevent. In August 2006 the FDA issued yet another alert reiterating the potential for developing TTP.

Many, many thanks, Leaving and Snoozy.

That information is a real eye-opener. And, as already said, all this is new to me. Deciding between food and meds ... hmmm....

So sorry for all your medical problems, dear Snoozy .

Will do further research per both your provided links.
