LOL, Syl that's messed up, cuz I like the actor LOL. I never watched the reruns of Gunsmoke, could never get into it. I had to google Matt Dillon and use the News Search option to figure out what you were talking about. Were you a fan of that show, and Arness?
Lol omg, I thought you were talking about the actor Matt Dillon. I googled the name and found the news that it was James Arness. :D
I thought you meant the actor too!
I loved me some James Arness and Gunsmoke.
My older brothers used to walk through dark woods to a neighbor's house to watch it; we girls weren't allowed to go.
When they came home, I would lie awake and listen to them discuss the show.
That's how I got to know the characters.

You young whippersnappers are just too much!

Gunsmoke was over my head. Bonanza was easier to understand. I did not know the difference between pretty (Little Joe) and ruggedly handsome (ARness).
Now Bonanza re-runs makes me sick, Gunsmoke holds up very well, IMO.
The writing is excellent and the acting is good. It certainly was an icon in its time.
Young people prob. have no clue.
It is a symbolic passing in many ways.
I loved that show. I bet crapola's watching it right now.
It runs on the Western cable station now almost every night. Unlike others, it stands up to time.
Snowbird, I'm with you.
I grew up watching Gunsmoke. My dad loved to watch it, and in fact I think my whole family saw it. We used to set up T.V . trays in the living room and eat dinner while we would watch all kinds of shows like Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Bonanza, Wonderful World of Disney, etc.
