Even Matt Dillon the marshal is not dead; in fact, he was never alive since he was a fictional character. It is sad, however, that James Arness has died. Aside from his role in the incomparable Gunsmoke he made a great monster in the movie The Thing.

Very sad to see James Arness died. What sad irony that his own actor brother Peter Graves who acted in Mission Impossible died less than a year ago. I had heard that James Arness was shattered when his brother died as they were very close. May they boh rest in peace. Great actors- both of them

Gunsmoke was a huge part of my childhood . . . right next to The Virginian, Bonanza and Rawhide. Feels like the end of an era everytime one of these actors departs.

John Wayne was a mentor of James Arness. When the radio Gunsmoke was planned as a TV series Wayne was offered the Dillon role. He declined but recommended Arness. What a gig. He got filthy rich.

I loved the show. Saturday night Gunsmoke. Ever notice how many episodes did not have happy endings?
