how big is a thought? An idea? Some hold more wieght than others. None can be measured.

The size never mattered as long as I was not subjected to them.

You are assuming a demon is beholden to physical laws of the universe.
Since I raised the question in order to address REALITY vs FICTION your statement is quite indicative.
The UNIVERSE is all there is. Period. Once you postulate a "beyond" all there is you have automatically switched FROM actually existing things to
imagination. Caution: when you MIX imagination with reality your rational mind loses.
Logic and rational thought only apply to REALITY.
This is the most dangerous aspect of religious thought! We lose our way and tamper with our vocabulary of thought which is the only connection we have
to WHAT IS.
We can THINK whatever we like. But, you cannot subject mere thought to the laws of logic or the real universe.

Demons are of the imagination. That is why all discussion of them FORCING A RATIONAL CONTEXT instantly makes abundantly clear the dead end.
You can't rationally discuss imagination AS THOUGH it is real. The conversation is absurd.
Conseqently, this thread instantly turned absurd!

Terry,
We almost had the demons in a box to be counted, almost. Good thread.

So, yes I am aware of how the early church developed and how the bible developed ... we see that in the early church scores of such councils (as the Council of Jerusalem) met to settle matters of dispute and to deal with the issues that did not adhere to the Apostolic faith.
I do not see that as myth or story telling or fabricated stories ... if all was a lie it would have no foundations to spread so quickly around the world!
You can't quote a myth to prove that myth is true, can you?
Considering the Myth as Fact doesn't improve it.
Think how many false things have spread around the world over many years. Did they spread BECAUSE they were true?
Rumors spread quickly. The more fantastic; the faster. The Jesus story kept getting more fantastic with each telling.

Jesus, now there is a personage of considerable myth and fabrecation.....As much so, as the topic question. From which sprang a dialog of the early Church, councils, Father's, so forth. How far a topic can stray......How big is a demon? As BIG as you imagine it to be. Simple really, when you think on it.

Band on the Run
Did the WT ever illustrate them? They were over the top with Armageddon pictures and people dying in the Flood. The art work seems consistent over generations. The shaplessness of demons terrified me more. I don't agree that spirits are subject to nature. I mean everyone assumed warp drive was impossible until Cochran. Warp drive introduced us to Vulcans, Romul;ans, Klingnons. Life has transformed so much since I was a kid. YOu never know.
From my adult NT reading, I say so what? I feel they are projections of ugly human emotions. What is the Jungian terms for the oppsites? Yes, they are shadows. We need demons in many ways. The Christians believed in the absolute Incarnation of Christ. He defeated demons handily as a sign of the inbreaking, present, tangible KIngdom of God. With Christ on our side, who are we to fear. I love Paul's quote about principlaities and dominions that nothing can ever separate us from Christ the Lord God.
So if I ever encounter a real, physical demon, I will just take over the cross I wear always around my neck, grab a Bible with the nT, and order the demon to deisist. If I have a dog at the time, though, the demons had better not going into my dog and run off a cliff. That demon would know more fury than the wrath of Jehovah.
Many years ago someone discussed the demon frenzy in the Witnesses for the New York Times. The person said that the WT did not worship Christ. Christ was barely mentioned, let alone His soverienty. Rather, demons were elevated as the primary message.
I feel it is crucial to acknowledge the sexual repression function of demons. I was terrorized for many years, not being able to sleep and looking behind every hinge. I equated darkness with demon presence. As though such a ferocious creature could be stopped by light. The WT ran an article about a demon materializing next to a witness woman in England on her bed to rape her. It was the last straw for me. Demon obsession lets Dudley Dorights wallk on the wild side with sexual repression. Sex seems to be the main function of demons. The OT story about the demons intermarrying is a hoot.
I don't recall one Witness demon picture. The Witness who barely escaped demon rape gave no clues as to what it looked like. Women can be shadows, too. We can be evil and dark. Female demons don't exist. I doubt if spirits and spooks have penises yet society gives them massive ones. We fear the sexual potency of these creature. I am curious as to how Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, and Raphael portrayed them. Travelling to Rome, Florence and Paris I saw the actual masterpieces but I've repressed the images.
I recall a Star Trek episode where some fog creature grew powerful and deadly over the anger Jim Kirk and a Klingnon had. They stopped the presence by laughing at it. More people should laugh at demons.
Years later, I sit in therapy and must admit how demons terrorized me throughout my adolescene. Note it is precisely the time when misunderstood sexual feelings start. My friends laugh their heads off at my former belief. I tell it for the joke. The fear was very sad and crippling. I was powerless over demons. The Witnesses tuaght that if you did not knock on enough doors one time, you were doomed. Yet they also taught in the lit and remarks at KH that those strong in the faith would be attacked, also. It was open season on me.
