It's what happens when the bank takes over the country and demands that people take another hit to their finances so they can get their money back.

Why let the IMF tell them what to do? Reminds me of Iceland getting ripped off and expecting the people to honor the bank loans they never made...it's time people made demands on their government and this is a way of showing those demands.

When austerity measures come to the USA, would you rally in the millions against your government that not only bailed out the banks but 'lost' billions of cash in another country? Or would you suck it up and shrug and say 'oh well'....and let them take 50% of your paycheck and live in a shack to pay off the loans they took out on your behalf? Oh and that includes the trillion or so that Regan removed from the SS fund for citizen pensions.. That's the way people are seeing it - .sammies

There was global unrest a hundred or so years ago as well, much of it rooted in social and economic injustice, one consequence of which was the Russian Revolution.
Are we headed for another revolution somewhere?

Let's hope everywhere! Good for the Greeks. Why should they sell themselves into servitute to pay for the lies of bankers? Let's hope the rest of us show similar courage in the years ahead.

Well Sir there was another period of unrest and revolution about 250 years ago, resulting in the American and French revolutions. I'm optimistic.

Two revolutions. One led to a stable Republic, the other gave us Napoleon. I guess your a glass half full person. Or maybe you picture yourself running the guillotine, not under it.

After reading a little bit of this Wikipedia article, It seems to me that the Government spent to much money expecting continued growth and they got caught short funded (due to global economic downturn of 2007). The government officials tried to hide the shortfall by using "tricky financial transactions" and got caught again...

The Greek economy was one of the fastest growing in the eurozone during the 2000s; from 2000 to 2007 it grew at an annual rate of 4.2% as foreign capital flooded the country. [19] A strong economy and falling bond yields allowed the government of Greece to run large structural deficits. According to an editorial published by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, large public deficits are one of the features that have marked the Greek social model since the restoration of democracy in 1974. After the removal of the right leaning military junta, the government wanted to bring disenfranchised left leaning portions of the population into the economic mainstream. [20] In order to do so, successive Greek governments have, among other things, run large deficits to finance public sector jobs, pensions, and other social benefits. [21] Since 1993 debt to GDP has remained above 100%. [22]

Our government runs on the same fiscal level as some individuals. "I can drive a $35,000.00 car for only $$299.00 per month. A 52" $1500.00 plasma TV = $25.00 mo., etc. etc. Then when the installment payment budget gets tight take out a second mortgage on your humble squat, pay off all that crap, enjoy a well earned vacation (you will need new clothes, camera and souviniers of course) and get a fresh start.
