I have one, it works some of the time, I wouldn't rely on it as my only form of communication.
Have you heard of or used Magic Jack?

We have had MJ for about two years now.
Although there are a couple of issues with the service, in general, it ranks about 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. You need broadband access. Ours is cable-based. For a time I had multiple user accounts on my PC, and that seemed to confuse MJ, and calls would not come through when my granddaughter used her account on the computer. So, I eliminated the user accounts and it works fine.
I can't imagine paying a large phone bill these days. The VOiP connection is clear, and we are satisfied with it.

Thanks, all, for your comments. Much appreciated.
I gather, then, that all of you had a trouble-free download, which never happened for me. When I searched out online remedies (complaints about bad customer service), the fix (tentative, at best) was way beyond my capabilities.
Do you know what Error Broken Storage means?

I got one because I wanted to get rid of my land line and didn't want to pay for a cell phone which would have cost even more. I can't call local numbers with MJ because my local phone company won't allow it to have access to them (at least that's MJ's claim). It works with long distance, but I hardly use long distance anyway, but when I do I haven't had a problem getting a connection. There is no customer support other than what you can get online - that's a big complaint, and a real headache. I got the run around for a long time when I first got it trying to get my problem resolved with local connections; they promised "quick action" that I would be "satisfied with" but it never happened - I just felt strung along.

"Error: broken storage" problem was fixed a while back. Granted, MJ lost all of my phone numbers, which are not stored locally, in the process of the upgrade. They assured me they changed their system and would never lose the numbers again.
My first unit actually didn't work, at all. It lit up, but wouldn't function, so I spent about 2 hours with customer "service" only to realize he was a moron blaming me for the problem. I'd read enough about the company to know I didn't want to order from them, so I'm glad I'd purchased it locally. Finally, I realized it wasn't user error and the device was a brick (despite the insistence to the contrary of the idiot on the other end of the online chat), took it back, and got a replacement. I've been using that one for a couple of years, now.
My biggest suggestion would be to buy one locally, just in case. You want to avoid contacting Magic Jack at all costs. They are utterly useless. Let's face it; you're not exactly paying a lot for great service. You want that, get Vonage for $25/month. For my rare issues with MJ, I prefer the $20/year. Actually, I just got the 5-year for $70 deal, so I'm set for a while.

My parents have a magic jack.
It's ok.
I set theirs up so that when you call their magic jack number, it also calls their cell phone, that way if the magic jack has been disconnected or the computer shut off by accident they still get the call.
I reccomend using magic jack for the free outgoing calls, but I wouldn't rely on it for incomming at all.

Thanks, Poppers, Min, Lore and Wont:
Now I get it. The unit could be defective from the start. I got the Error B.S. after the Lucky You message that it was downloading [not]. After that scenario three times, I gave up. I didn't want to go into my system and screw it all up.
Your comments have been helpful. Thank you. Yes, Min, you get what you pay for though I never did pay but to send it back.

Okay, well, I guess its been different for me, cause I love it! Paying a phone bill got way too expensive for me. I have google voice also, and thats the main number that I give people, and it forwards to my magic jack. Its a lot cheaper then having a phone bill every month although I still do have my cell phone bill each month.

I got Ooma. It was an expensive start - but free for life after initial fee. So far - no problems .
