Oh, he can still count time for talking to an ex-study. Only if the person is baptized or df'd/da'd, is counting time a no-no. I know quite a few jws that kept calling on people they had studied with.
How bad is their shunning policy towards old studies?

I went to the Memorial and chatted with a nice couple. He gave me his business card for insurance sales with his email. I thought he implied to contact him for spiritual issues, but now I think he was trying to get insurance business. I wrote him a positive email and thanked him for our dialogue. I went over some of the points he did not have answers to and asked him more questions. As a Christian, I would see this as a great opportunity to connect, witness, defend/proclaim my faith with a person of faith (even if the wrong one). It is a courtesy to reply to an email when someone gives their email with this implication. I was never responded to, just ignored. He knew I was never a JW, but probably sees me as an opposer (apostate would technically be incorrect). Is this type of rudeness common? Truth does not run from error. I am not impressed. JWs also say they will get back to you or bring someone more informed, but they never do (not keep word; theocratic warfare?).
I also worked with a now DF JW. His sons work in my field and I run into them at the gym, bottle depot, etc. One is professional and friendly, says token 'hi', knows I have been at their meetings, but oppose WT. The other son shuns me like I am DF and won't even say boo. This is odd behavior. Door-to-door is highly ineffective compared to relational, friendship evangelism. I hope the WT keeps telling JWs to distance themselves from non-JWs. It will keep them from impacting lives for the bad. The cultic mentality is polar opposite to the Christian mentality I am privileged to be part of. I can love a JW, befriend them, go to their meetings, etc., but they cannot/do not do the same.

Some JWs might like to have an old study contact them, but can you believe it, many JWs might actually be looking to dodge getting involved in extra "preaching work"? Especially for a new member indoctrination study that might get in the way of leisure time spent on Facebook, watching Netflix movies and playing the Angry Birds game on their Ipad.

How likely is it for a JW to get tied up over a period of time to study with opposers like me? Mormon missionaries will do it; I will do it, but I doubt JWs will do it. How often to JWs get tied up with people who are lonely, have mental illness, etc. and end up wasting much time studying, but have no intention of ever converting?

EducatingMyself I don't know that you are being shunned per se. I threw a lot of apostate ideas at them before I discontinued my study. Trust me, it had become verrrrry uncomfortable and unpleasant for everyone involved.
But I did make it clear that I really liked them on a personal level. But did not want to discuss watchtower teachings any longer. So I figure if they continue to visit me I will take it as a social call.
Blondie....I agree that the chances are pretty high that they are still counting time...But that is their problem. In the meantime it is still lovely to see them and hopefully they enjoyed the visit too. (just a bonus for them if they can count it).
Shunning me would have no effect and would be quite pointless...how would it possibly teach me anything....they have nothing I want and I have nothing to loose.
I dare say this would be the same for most studies. So it would take them to a whole new level of stupidity if they were to use shunning on studies as a way to "make them see the errors of their ways"
