something that TRANSCENDS mere existence. Surviving is something cockroaches do very well. They do not aspire to art, music, literature, philosophy or science. They merely exist. Period.

Yes, we are going in the same direction with this.

When dealing with rape/CSA survivors, I would always tell them,,, okay, first you were a survivor .... but NOW it is time to move forward, from survivor,,, to THRIVER.

Same sentiment applied to a different scenario (ie, religious abuse).

My head hurts.....there are things I know because I know them ( maybe )...then, there are things I don't know, then things I don't know, because I don't know that I don't know them....so, what do I know, nothing? Now that forces me to use my brain to examine my beliefs. When I would just as soon believe what I know..........You make me nuts. That much I do know....

I've written about this too. You have to be willing to give up "knowing" that everything can be known in order to grow after being a dub.

Ex--once on this forum I was discussing the dubs' arrogant disregard of medicine/science, specifically, they were having me take a certain vitamin. There is ample proof this vitamin does not help my medical condition. Any kind of proof du jour was available--scientific studies, doctors' recommendations, and anecdotal evidence in the form of me having blood tests before and after to see the difference under the microscope. In fact, the type of pill they were giving me was allegedly a crushed plant, not just the vitamin--and that plant happens to be very bad for said medical condition.

A poster kept insisting it would help me and I am just wrong about all this. With no evidence provided.

He didn't know what he didn't know, and he didn't want to. Too bad for him. A brain is a terrible thing to waste.

"while still being open to new information" is very important, without that attitude you cannot grow, and you will not get rid of any of your unkowns of whatever ilk.

I agree with your ,as ever excellent post,Terry, except I would actually highlight more than you did the illusory nature of J.W's "moving forward", we used to hear this kind of drivil when we were in "You must keep up with J's Org."

It does not move anywhere, and as you rightly say, what they think they are progressing to, is a pipe-dream.

The only keeping up a JW should do is to be aware of the latest flip-flop on doctrine, but that is only going from one steaming pile to an even more steaming pile, hardly progress.

Around the year 1979 there was a brutal and amazing film about an American youth who tried smuggling hashish out of Turkey (I think) and who was thrown in a maximum security prison. (MIDNIGHT EXPRESS)

One scene stands out in my memory.

Once reduced to hopeless conformity to mindless existence prisoners entered a cavernous room with a large oxwheel circle. One by one they fell into a journey to nowhere and nothing by circling again and again and again the same trudging circuit until they dropped.

    Why?

Humanity must move forward even if it is in a circle to nowhere but oblivion! I think of the Watchtower Society as that cavernous room filled with desperate people blindly following a circuit of illusory forward progress who end up exhaustedly dropping out in the end!

Imprisoned in the illusion of freedom! Progressing again and again toward where they began. Covering the same worn ground seeking new light.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and had an awful cough.

The doctor told me to completely avoid sugar for a month.

He prescribed an expensive cough medicine.

It was sort of crusty and granular in the spoon.

    I asked him "why?"

"Oh, that's just sugar to make it more flavorable."

    Doh!

There are also things you don't know that you know. It's usually distilled down as

    1. Known knowns

    2. Unknown knowns

    3. Known unknowns

    4. Unknown unknowns
