WT: "Don't watch news items featuring witnesses!"

When 20/20 did the special on sexual child abuse within the Jehovah Witness organization, word spread about it and folks (at least in my area) were warned not to watch it. We were told that apostates and Satan were behind it and that the girls that came forward were lying and their families had been influenced by the demons.

Witnesses that did watch it were criticized for letting apostates into their home. I watched.

The congregations (in my area) were told that we should not take things like that public because the public doesn't understand that we are under attack by Satan. Issues should be taken to the elders and they will deal with them.

There were also local news stories of witnesses leading business scams and they would interview the witnesses that pressed charges. First thing others would say is that the person pressing charges is turning apostate. And again, you be criticized for watching it because the world doesn't understand that they scammer was not a real witness and that it was Satan using that person to give witnesses a bad name.

**As I typed this post, it screams "cult" or "crazy"...take your pick.**

This is nothing new but it's a fresh dose so close after the convention which had a talk on apostasy.
I am nervous about this article & the one coming up 2 weeks after it. My husband who is never confrontational got into an argument with me after reading a daily text on keeping free from spiritual contamination. So what is he going to be like after studying this article and going over it at the meeting that's 2 hours of this crap in his head. Then there is my 8 year old & this crap getting into her head.

I hope my telling him that the warnings about apostates is not for their spiritual benefit but for the WBT$ to keep their secrets hidden, comes to mind while he's reading over this garbage.

discreetslave - I really sympathise with that situation, it must be unbearable. You would be tempted to say things like, "apostates are supposed to look for their own disciples, do you honestly think I'm looking to gather disciples to follow after me?" or (depending on your outlook) "do you think I want to lead anyone away from Christ?" (that, after all being the principal scriptural argument against apostates) or, in all seriousness "do you really think I'm mentally diseased?" I'm not suggesting you say any of those things - you alone know how best to deal with your unique situation. I'm just thinking out loud as to what I would say in that situation. I do feel for you.

But how do they handle it when there are "favorable" articles about jws....without an ex-jw in sight. Or an unfavorable one with a non-jw the author. I wonder how many jws watched Knocking by Joel Engardio, who was raised a jw but never got baptized?

This is possibly an admission on the Society's part that few if any former witnesses will have anything positive to say about their experience or the organisation in general, which in itself is a damning indictment.

Cedars- I've asked questions like that already. We'll be in NY this weekend so he probably won't be able to study it as thoroughly. He'll be visiting our old cong that day and having to tell everyone why I'm not there so that might upset him. He might be in the KH thinking my wife was taken away by these mentally diseased wolves & is now friends with them if not one herself. It's wait & see I'll let you guys know if it causes any waves.

Yes please do. I hope this Watchtower article doesn't make your life any more difficult than it already is, but I guess we shall have to wait and see. Hopefully forewarned is forearmed, and if anybody on here wasn't warned about the forthcoming WT study, they know about it now. It may be a lot of fuss about nothing - besides, much of these things have been said for years, although (to my knowledge) not in such a vitriolic way. However, I can't see it doing any good - put it that way.
