So let me get this right, the First Amendment will protect the right of a religion to do virtually WTF it likes, but the individual is not protected and allowed the "free exercise of his religion" because the religion he has just left can blackmail his family ?

I think your Constitution needs a re-write if that is the case.

If a Law like that were passed..

The WBT$ would be obligated to follow it or face the courts..

WBT$ would loose 50% of the JW population over night..

    .......................;-)...OUTLAW

they would know about this "new anti-shunning legislation" at least a year before it is passed into law (since the watchtower lawyers have "friends" in high places who would tip them off way ahead of everyone else)... then they would simply have a special talk at the next assembly or convention (again, way before the new legislation is even known by the general public) and then announce that there is "new light" regarding the treatment of disfellowshipped or dissasociated ones... this "new light" will basically change the current policy to one of a personal conscience matter... "you know what the bible says, we're not going to take any action if you have association with disfellowshipped ones, but..."

That would be the only wriggle room they had Alf, but what a difference that would make !!

So many JW's would actually start to listen to their own conscience in this matter, and from that could spring them actually developing their own conscience, instead of what most of them have today the "What does the Society say about this?" conscience.

If the penalty were a loss of Tax Breaks, they would come up with a craftily worded get out clause that would send a mixed message, one for the R&F and one for the authorities.

To save their money, the WTS stopped calling themselves a religion, singing songs and saying prayers in Mexico.

They would do a 'nudge, nudge , wink, wink' policy and publically lie thru their teeth as they still do with the blood issue, especially in Europe.

    My exact point Metatron,

They would say that they don't disfellowship members who associate with ex-JWs or disfellowshipped people...that the decision to shun is left to each individual. Then internally they would view the people who decided not to shun as disassociated members...just as they do with those who accept blood transfusions...they are no longer disfellowshipped...their decision to accept blood is viewed as a disassociation.

I think that they would accept certain components of a DA, DF person.
