Huh! I was baptized in 91, and the UN stuff was HUGE at the time. I remember there was an article in a magazine (secular) that warned that the UN was setting up international churches all over the world. The dubs copied and recopied that article so many times, it was but a faded mess when I got my copy. So a brother called the UN to ask about it, and was told they had not printed the article but it came from a magazine that had a political/religious type spin. BUT THEY DIDN'T DENY IT!

    LOL

Hmm, interesting .... this thread got me wondering. So just now I wandered over to the Jehovah's Witnesses Official Web Site and searched "united nations" to see what I would find.

First of all, their search engine doesn't support true boolean searches. Even though I put the search string in quotes, it returned articles that had BOTH words in it, but not necessarily together as a string. The search gave 119 results. I only perused the first 10 and most of those articles had nothing to do with "the wild beast". Nevertheless, four of those ten did. Notice how "the beast" is portrayed by the WTBTS in these selected quotes from the Awake! magazine from 1999 through 2005:

    • An Ongoing Search for Solutions - "FROM its very inception, the United Nations organization has been interested in children and their problems. At the end of 1946, it established the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) as a temporary measure to care for children in areas devastated by war." - g2000 12/08
    • SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT - "Various organizations have also been sounding the alarm about threats to the environment. These include the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization; the United Nations Environment Programme; and Greenpeace. " - g2003 11/22
    • HOMELESSNESS: What Is Behind It? - "The book Strategies to Combat Homelessness, published by the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements, identifies a number of shortcomings of the present social, political, and economic system when it comes to providing homes for all. " - g2005 12/08
    • The Mediterranean—A Closed Sea With Open Wounds - "In 1990 the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) reported that 93 percent of shellfish taken from the Mediterranean contained more fecal bacteria than the maximum allowed by the World Health Organization." - g99 1/08

Amazing - they read like cheerleader articles for the UN! Surprising I didn't notice it then when I was still in, but then again that would probably be exactly why I didn't get it!

Again, I only scanned the first 10 articles that came up using the search string "united nations". But I think it is significant--huge even--that not a single quote or comment was anything less than neutral about "the beast" and generally they come across as favorable and supportive regarding the U.N., fawning even!

Tell me again, who is the whore on the back of the beast?

Didn't the WT attribute the scripture in Matt 24 about "standing where it ought not" to an event that related to the UN. This was abandoned sometime in the 1980s.

They'll hold back until everyone who was stumbled by the society joining the UN has left. Give it another few years, then they'll recycle the old prophetic interpretations, they've got nothing else.

There's a certain lack of freddie franzesq inspiration in the society's publications these days. The Isaiah books I & II were absolutely useless.

Yes designs, that awful Revelation book just about sums it up. It truly was awful. I'm just glad we left before my kids had to study the rubbish. How can they be a charitable organization and publish shocking trash such as that.

To think I actually sat there and gave serious attention to it's content.

Another item that seems to have disappeared from the Watchtower "boogy man" play list is the Catholic Church. I grew up with booklets all over the house depicting the Pope and his bishops as evil demons. In the past it has been their favorite symbol of Babylon the Great. Now that the pedophile issue has hit home it seems the WT has lost interest in the ripe target of the Catholic Church.

Not meant to hijack the excellentWT/ UN observations this thread is providing, but it seems to be of a piece.

What keeps Jehovah's Watchtower religion from being just another sucker following a false lead?

The don't care when they are wrong.

They just keep publishing the new opinion and keep their mouth shut about the old one.

So, the point is not that they are ever wrong. It is that IT DOESN'T MATTER to them.

The butts in the Kingdom Hall folding chairs have their brains clicked "off" and aren't paying much attention anyway.

Ninety per cent of them didn't know the OLD teaching--how are they going to care if there is a NEW one?

JW's dont' really LEARN their own theology. You may as well expect them to learn Chinese in their spare time.

The real skill to remaining a "good" JW is parroting "answers" at the Watchtower study and knocking doors.

    Period.

The actual Dogma of the religion smells and tastes like Dog food anyway.

SIGNS are a common mistake religious people make.

All denominations fall for the same exploitation of scary world events.

Once you adopt the mindset that the latest news MEANS something biblical you're like a mouse going for the cheese.

The trap snaps down on the back of your neck.

    Nothing means nothing.
