    Stomach Problems?

Okay I know it sounds cheezy. I found that eating two tablespoons of HYDROGENATED crunchy Jiff peanut butter right before bedtime has helped me from having heartburn problems. :-))

No lame natural stuff, or it won't even work. It will have long digested before being a value. On the other hand, you can count of the hydrogenated oils to "hang around a spell." At least this will help you get you through the breakfast pill-taking ritual. Especially if you don't eat much (doesn't apply to me) for lunch, then you're stomach is virtually toxic with strong 'medicines.(including vitamins AND too may probiotics at once! They bloat you.) " Good to hit the probiotics DAILY and with STRONG, LIVE GLENDA THE GOOD WITCH BUGS to live comfortably in your stomach (better than DEAD ones, right??) The reason probiotics work especially well for me is the discovery I have Candida as well in my digestive system; and the probiotics cut the nausea effect of colitis seriously.

I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. But Hopefully those of you who suffer these digestive problems won't just rely on your doctor's advice. Do some food tests - do without an entire type of food for 3 weeks and see if you detect a difference. Ditch all the restaurants and cut the salt intake in half. You will see the need to put your own ailing system through double -blind tests for 2-3 weeks at at time to slowly eliminate the real problem causes. No case will be just the same as mine, but the advise works well with many related cases.
The downside: I have to prepare 95 % of ALL my own food to avoid any traces of wheat, soy sauce, yeast extract (it's in 99,9% of all packaged and canned foods), bread, flour, white sugar and all wheat-related products. In fact, I can't drink beer or wine because of the fermentation issue either. Even strong fermented cheese will make me sick. But as a result I eat better than most people and don't get sick. It just takes longer to prepare meals.

My condition was caused by several massive doses of antibiotics, without which I wouldn't have this problem in the first place. I suffered with Colitis for many years and no drugs had any effect. I had to double-blind test by diet to finally find the devil in the closet. I suffered off and on. NOT ONE DOCTOR HAD A CLUE BUT TO PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE THAT WAS USELESS.

The way it works for me is, although you may not have much acid in the tummy before you go to bed, but if you have to take old people pills when you wake up, and they give me heartburn, I immediately take a cup of goat's milk (highly underrated) and a bite of peanut butter. Don't use the natural kinds. I also knew that taking some form of fat bedlore bedtime was better on the stomach lining (also in the AM).

Don't do this if you have any allergies to peanuts!

Now I know you will all offer advice, some good some irrelevant, but may people suffer from this. And please don't send me a pamphlet. :_0)

I don't suffer from colitis or any GI problems now, however before I lost almost 30 pounds I had heartburn and acid reflux and had to take meds like Prilosec or some other anti-reflux medication or antacid.

I now take a fiber supplement and a probiotic supplement as well as incorporate products like Greek yogurt in my diet and I feel much better.

Thank you. Hubby's been having heartburn because of all the meds he had to take at night. Maybe this will help.

Can you post this elsewhere, with slightly different wording perhaps? I would love to share this with a JW relative who really suffers from heartburn/reflux. I have candida and ulcerative colitis, so it wouldn't be unusual for me to run across it elsewhere. TIA

OY! You must be my brother from another mother! Same thing ... too many antibiotics as a child,,, can't eat grains, etc., went through the elimination process, and cook 95% of my own food.

I totally agree with what you've posted (I don't do peanut butter - too much sugar in the processed stuff, but I ALWAYS eat a protein at bedtime).

And I don't need to take meds!!!

    Two additional tips

-- good digestion is aided by eating mango (you can buy it frozen), as it has enzymes that are very powerful. I try to finish my meal with a couple of bites.

-- beans and lentils are easily digested, lots of fibre, complex carbs and protein. Great substitute for meat 3/4 times per week.

Thanks for posting this, I know a lot of folks suffer with these problems, and 'Medicine' doesn't have many answers ... (my doctor agrees)

I know hydrogenated oils are not good, but neither are chemicals that coat the stomach like Pepto Bismol. They upset the natural workings of the stomach much worse... same with antacids. I think the hydrogenated oils just sit there and don't allow much in. :-))

Hey, don't knock it. Works EVERY TIME for me. And I'm not really a fan of peanut butter. Hate sweets and jelly! ('cept ice cream).

I would have to do a little research, but the antacids actually make the stomach produce more acid, creating a vicious cycle. A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water is recommended by many naturopaths for this problem. You can find a good explanation here: http://www.nilheartburn.com/vinegar_for_heartburn.html

BTS --- have you checked into the posibility of a 'hiatal or hiatus' hernia? My father has this condition. It causes really bad heartburn. It's not fatal and can be controlled by diet. It's also VERY COMMON!! You could read a bit about it online, just to get some details. Just a thought ...

If it's heartburn you want to get rid of, this has been a MIRACLE for me: I can't recommend this stuff enough.

http://www.gerolsteiner.de/index.php?id=1244 (Not sure if it's the magnesium/calcium, but whatever it is - it is nothing short of AMAZING)

    From their website:

And hydrogen carbonate provides for a balanced acid-base balance and protects against hyperacidity and heartburn.

I know it works for me. Not sure what the implications are for colitis...
