UnThanksgiving Day

I spoke to my mother yesterday. It had been about two weeks and I felt she was due for a call. Mother informed me again that my sister was coming for a visit (she's flying in Sunday) but she would only be here until Friday. So the black Friday shopping trip is off but mother said they would most likely go shopping about a day or so after my sister's arrival. The shopping invitation is still outstanding, I haven't confirmed.

Mother also informed me that she is going to cook her turkey the Wednesday before turkey day with all the fixings and that my children and I are invited to come over. Notice she did not include my husband in the invite and needless to say we all won't be going.

My mother is still in her delusional state that we're all one big happy family with my husband kicked to the curb. How wrong she is. My family and I are going out of town come Tuesday. My parent and siblings can have fun without me and mine. It's been that way for the last two years, why should I try to change anything?

Oh. My mom once invited her active JW sister to a family meal on Thanksgiving. It would be called Thanksgiving in deference to the JWs. It was the only day in months that my mom had enough time off to cook and clean for company. She was told no but anyother day. A meal on Thanksgiving day is not a High Eucharist. Does turkey make it Thanksgiving or does pumpkin pie?

We used to go to Manhattan every year and see the Thanksgiving parade, the high event of my mom's year. There was always a perfunctory lecture about how Thanksgiving is no good. When the weather is nice, those ballloons and clowns certainly trumped the Witness stance. We would have Thanksgiving meals and the food would be thrown and destroyed in anger. Very wrong but we are doing it nevertheless. I pictured us dying in one of those WT Armageddon illustrations.

What woman of any substance would show up without her husband? Etiquette books say that you are responsible for the entertainment of out of town guests. A husband ranks much higher. Frankly, we cherish any time without my brother in law. I despise him. Yet I would never think of excluding him.My manners must embrace him. Besides opposing the in-law, only bonds the couple tighter. I would find my sister morally deficinet if she accepted an invitation that excluded him. I thought putting up with relatives you don't like was the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

My mom and I often spent Thanksgiving in nice NY restaurants, just the two of us. Families are nice. It is only one day of the year. Be nice.

Yer mom's a wookie, dear Miz Jones (the greatest of love and peace to you, dear one!). And a hypocrite (considering the WTBTS stance on marrige). And a "wanting" (as in lacking the better "mothering" skills) mother. Sorry, don't mean to offend, but... well, she doesn't deserve you as a daughter, IMHO. But with blood... well, you get what you get sometimes. Ah, well...

You, Hubby, and your precious young folk have a GREAT day, my sister... and let mom and them "eat cake"!

    Peace, chile!

YOUR servant, sister, and a slave of Christ,

If I had to guess I would have to say its a bit of self hate (my mother is fairly dark) and latent wish to marry a white man. She got very close with my father (he and his family are pretty light, a shade lighter than a paper bag). All the other stuff is control.

I went out in field circus once on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, there was a group out that day--back in the late 1980s. They would get the smell of turkey at every door, even though they were getting everyone home. They liked the placement of littera-trash and pxxxing off every householder for disrupting their holiday, but the smell of cooking turkey ended up making them crave the stuff. So they tried to find a place that had turkey, and they could find none. Rather, they had to settle for hamburgers.

Never again did I do field circus on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Not only did that spoil the householders' holidays, but it was too assured of finding too many people home. And, if I did find anyone, they would hound me to make a record of it in my call book so they could harass me to keep returing every few days. Needless to say, I did not like doing field circus when people were home.

I'm happy to say I have never gone out in fs on a holiday.
