When I was growing up in the 1950's the book study was called a service center. We went out in pre-study work from 6:45 to 7:45 on tuesday nights before our 8pm book study. My parents had the study in our home and I hated the fact that I had to continuously work the territory around my house and call on school mates. "Hey whatcha sellin"? Got so tired of hearing that.

From what I hear, in Austria this is common. Many publishers have their own personal territories, they make arrangement among themselves to meet on their terrotory, and they go out less often in groups.

Someone mentioned apartment buildings. I hated working inside apartment buildings, especially if it was a single family home converted into apartments. I always preferred to knock on the door and see who answered.

One time I was working with a hardcore Witness, and she insisted we go into a small apartment house, and we were yelled at by some woman, wondering how we got inside. I understood how she felt. There were only three apartments in there. We should have just knocked on the door and talked to whoever answered.

But,even as a pioneer, I never bothered taking out a territory. I just worked along with the group. I'm glad, I never have to do field service again.

I just read over the 2-15-2002 WT and there is a definite paragraph about Jesus sending out people by twos, and the importance of not going alone...

    Enthusiasm tends to

rub off on our companions. Jesus sent

his disciples out to preach in twos rather

    than individually. (Luke 10:1) This

    not only provided encouragement and

training but also heightened their zeal

for the ministry. Do we not appreciate

    working with zealous Kingdom publishers?

    Their enthusiastic spirit encourages

us and spurs us on in the preaching

    work.—Rom. 1:12.

Another potential problem with permanently assigned territories is, what if a publisher makes a mistake on one occasion? Or, what if a publisher becomes disliked in their assigned territory? Normally, if this happens, another witless would be coming within a few months. This way, however, it will be the same witless--who will be remembered for their one fault. Who is going to take the blame when this happens, the witless that got stuck with their one territory?

    Good grief.

I've yet to meet a JW who wants to work in their own neighbourhood - they don't want their neighbours to know they are JWs!!!

    Direct Your Blows Wisely

    1. First Corinthians 9:26 has what application to the ministry?

1 The apostle Paul wrote: “The way I am running is not uncertainly; the way I am directing my blows is so as not to be striking the air.” (1 Cor. 9:26) Paul was referring to his single-mindedness and sharp focus in pursuing spiritual goals. However, in principle, these words also apply to the ministry.(of course it does ) We want to direct our “blows,” or efforts, wisely so that they will accomplish the most good. How?

    2. How can we imitate Paul and other first century evangelizers in selecting when and where to preach?

    Go Where the People Are:

2 Paul and other first-century evangelizers preached where they expected people to be. (Acts 5: 42;16:13; 17:176:13; 17:17) So if many in our territory are at home in the evening, this may be the best time to go from house to house. Is the local bus or train station busy in the early mornings and late afternoons when people are going to work or returning home? When are the shopping areas in the territory filled with people? Street witnessing may be most productive during these times.

    3. How can we direct our blows wisely in the way we work our territory?

    Work the Territory Wisely:

3 Care should also be taken to direct our blows wisely in the way we work our territory. For example, instead of taking a very large group into the same area, where much time and effort will be required to keep the group organized and busy, it may be better to divide the group. Similarly, when working rural territory, we will cover the territory faster and have more opportunities to speak if car groups are not too large. Could we obtain a personal territory near our home, which would reduce the time needed for travel?

    4. What will help us to be successful “fishers of men”?

4 Jesus likened evangelizers to “fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) A fisherman’s objective is not simply to fish but to catch fish. Therefore, successful fishermen go where and when they expect to find fish, and they begin fishing without delay. Yes, they direct their efforts wisely. May we show similar industriousness in our ministry.—Heb. 6:11.

And what is this a symptom of?

    desperation

They don't know what to do. They don't know what to say. They are thrashing around, flailing about, with no clear direction of any kind.

This is throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.
