While it is true that this topic is 'fluff' and fun. I think that it is also significant to know that the Saints winning the superbowl was a good thing for the people of New Orleans. Sure, it wasn't life changing, but after the devestation of Katrina, it help the city feel good and that's a good thing, isn't it?

I think it was similar to many football fans when the Patriots won in 2001 after the world trade center attacks. Both at the time were classified underdogs who overcame great odds.

Not life changing, no, but sometimes feeling good is good enough.

    just mho,

TEC: I don't know why anyone would get all annoyed or offended by it, unless they want to be offended. (or perhaps unless they were the ones who failed to stop the touchdown, lol)

From the Christian perspective, do you think Jesus just wanted to be annoyed or offended and that's why he counseled against showy displays of public prayer?

BTS:"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full." http://bible.cc/matthew/6-5.htm

TEC: In either case, it doesn't sound like its Tebow you have a problem with... just God, if God answers that prayer and not others that involve people being hurt.

My problem isn't with god, it isn't even with those who invented the different gods, since I could expect that from primitive man.

"In dark ages people are best guided by religion, as in a pitch-black night a blind man is the best guide; he knows the roads and paths better than a man who can see. When daylight comes, however, it is foolish to use blind old men as guides."
    - Heinrich Heine (Quoted in God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything - Christopher Hitchens)

"I believe religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind — that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking." HL Mencken

Swap "religion" for "uncritical belief in a detailed description of an 'ineffable' being." Tebow is just a bold manifestation of a... notion that robs me of peace.

Well, I don't know if He was annoyed or offended. Only that He taught against it. Because it was false.

And again, a thanks such as a finger point to the sky, or crossing oneself, or a quick knee... all of these things could simply be the result of an overwhelming joy... so that this joy within them comes out in a visual way. The only thing that makes ones like these a showy display is the fact that there are cameras on them. But that could just be a result of their career. But are there also some who are hypocrites and do it to be show what 'good and righteous' people they are? Sure. Those would be the hypocrites doing something for show. But that doesn't mean that they all are like that. David danced in the streets, in joy and thanks. Christ publicly gave thanks for some things, as well.

Tebow is just a bold manifestation of a... notion that robs me of peace.

And that would be the real issue, I guess. But what he does (and believes) is up to him, as long as it hurts no one else. Faith in God is here, whether it is boldly shown or hidden away. I don't think anyone should be all 'look at me' about it. But I also don't think anyone should have to hide it away, either.

    Peace,

    Aaaarrrrgh....

How did a funny, light-hearted thread about a silly football player get dragged into a "serious" theological discussion???

Tebow's an idiot who's making a very public spectacle of himself - and like Harold Camping, the Watchtower alcoholics and other 'end-times' false prophets, has failed miserably in the most painfully obvious way possible....

Which gives me no end of pleasure....
