Received this as an email (obviously directed to Americans):

Below is a list of automobile manufacturers showing how they contributed to the relief and recovery efforts of September 11, 2001.

    1. Ford- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee
contributions of the same number plus 10 Excursions to NY Fire Dept.

Ford also offered ER response team services and office space to
    displaced government employees.

    2. GM- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number and a fleet of vans, SUV's, and trucks.

    3. Daimler Chrysler- $10 million to support of the children and victims of the Sept. 11 attack.

    4. Harley Davidson motorcycles- $1 million and 30 new motorcycles to the New York Police Dept.

    5. Volkswagen- Employees and management created a Sept 11 Foundation,
funded initial with $2 million, for the assistance of the Children and
    victims of the WTC.

    6. Hyundai- $300,000 to the American Red Cross.

    7. Audi- Nothing.

    8. BMW- Nothing.

    9. Daewoo- Nothing.

    10. Fiat- Nothing.

    11. Honda- Nothing. They did boast they had the second best sales month ever in August 2001.

    12. Isuzu- Nothing.

    13. Mitsubishi- Nothing.

    14. Nissan- Nothing.

    15. Porsche- Nothing. A press release with condolences via the Porsche
    website was posted.

    16. Subaru- Nothing.

    17. Suzuki- Nothing.

    18. Toyota- Nothing despite claims of high sales in July and August 2001 as well as condolences posted on the website.

Whenever the time may be for you to purchase or lease a new vehicle, keep this information in mind. You might want to give more consideration to a car manufactured by an American-owned and / or American based company.

Apart from Hyundai and Volkswagen, the foreign car companies contributed nothing at all to the citizens of the United States.

It's OK for these companies to take money out of this country, but it is apparently not acceptable to return some in a time of crisis.

I believe we should not forget things like this. Say thank you in a way that gets their attention.

    Pass it on.

No, it was an email I received - was hoping some of our crack-researchers here would either confirm this or shoot it down with facts so I could respond to the person who sent it to me.

How much did American (or any!) car companies contribute to e.g. the victims of the genocides in Rwanda, Bosnia or Kosovo?

Edited to add: it is absolutely sickening that the tragedy is used to bolster sales of American cars.

so far out of these billions collected? I've herd reports that there are still people loosing there homes not to mention applying for wel fare because they were even having a hard time getting help to pay for funerals. The expenses wiped out many financially and have nothing to feed there kids with.

Your source doesn't appear to have done a very thorough job. I picked one of the car makers at random (Toyota), and did some looking.

It appears that Toyota has donated $1.93 Million to the relief effort, which is more than both Ford and GM. In addition, Toyota funds numerous other charities.

Your source appears to be inventing statistics for the purpose of whipping up a little anti-foreign sentiment. Here is one of the articles that I found:

Toyota Announces Additional Donations to Disaster Relief Efforts, Raising Total to $1.93 Million

Employees And Dealers Make Contributions To American Red
Cross, The New York Police And Fire Widows' And Children's
Benefit Fund And The Washington Family Relief Fund

November 13, 2001 -- New York, NY -- Toyota and its North
American companies, employees and dealers, today
announced an additional $930,000 in donations to three
organizations assisting in the relief efforts for the tragic
events of September 11. The donations to the American Red
Cross; The New York Police And Fire Widows' And Children's
Benefit Fund and the Washington Family Relief Fund are in
addition to a previously announced contribution of $1 million
    to the American Red Cross.

Toyota will donate $780,000 from U.S. employee and dealer
contributions and company matched funds to the American
Red Cross. All funds from Toyota's contribution to the
American Red Cross will go to support the families of
September 11 victims. In addition, the company will also
contribute funds to two local New York and Washington, D.C.
organizations that are providing support to families in their
communities who were affected by the tragedy. They are The
New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund,
which will receive $125,000; and the Washington Family Relief
Fund, which will receive $25,000. Combined with the
previously announced donation to the American Red Cross,
Toyota's total donation to U.S. relief efforts is $1,930,000.

I love www.urbanlegends.com! I just hate getting these type of soddy emails that get passed to me on a daily basis. If I find the story is an UL on this website, I'm quick to hit "REPLY ALL" with this link attached. If that doesn't stop the spread of the email I just received, it at least makes people think twice about sending stuff to me.

    Another good site is www.snopes.com

    Totally false.

Here's my rule of thumb - if I receive a forwarded email from ANYONE that 'just has to share some important information' and then proceeds to try and tell me some shocking 'facts' I immediately dis-regard it because it's CRAP.

Forwarded emails set my BS detector onto HIGH setting.
