A combination of family and refusing to play by their rules.
Writing a letter, especially at their request if they've been hounding you, is giving them authority that they no longer have. I can't stop them from doing/saying certain things, but I sure as hell don't have to do their job, or make it easy, for them. They want to go on a witch hunt, I'll lead em on a trek through the wilderness. Deny, lie, deflect, avoid...all these things used on me by them, I can return tenfold.
