Thanks for all the great comments. It really puts things in another perspective. Being raised as a JW it always seemed so abviously clear that Christmas is evil, and I am really enjoying learning otherwise, and the far more balanced and loving approach that has been presented here.

We told our kids that Santa is a fun pretend person like Barney the dinosaur.
We also told them that some kids believe he's real, so don't spoil it for them by telling them he's pretend; they'll find out soon enough.
Our honesty with our kids didn't lessen their enjoyment of Christmas at all.
They still banged on our door at 6 am to open presents.
