While I don't advocate smoking for health reasons, if you are going to smoke, I recommend getting the best cigars you can afford. If you are going to do it, you might as well enjoy it to the full.

What I do not recommend is cigarettes. Those things are made to be smoked en masse, not to be enjoyed occasionally. And Scotch, again I recommend getting the highest quality you can get--that way, you will not be able to afford enough to abuse it on a regular basis but you will be able to really enjoy it when you do indulge.

WT Wizard, smoking a cigar shouldn't involve inhaling, much like smoking a pipe. The few times I accidentally inhaled if felt like a mule kicked me in the chest. Cigars are to enjoy the flavor, the time it takes to smoke one and the experience.

As far as getting the best you can afford, absolutely. It's no trick to find a good cigar for $7, a really good cigar for $10-12 and a great cigar for more than that. The trick is to find a good cigar for $3 and a great one for $5 ;)

Same for Scotch (strangely I just got back from buying some at the liquor store and stocking up on cigars yesterday...). Once you have good scotch and good cigars, you can't go back. I am lucky enough to have a cigar store nearby (JR) where you can buy at about 40% off regular price if you buy in quantities of 5 or more and have liquor stores nearby where I can get Macallan in 1.75 litre bottles.

Sadly, I can afford enough good quality of both to abuse whenever I choose, although I rarely choose to abuse.

Having said that, it's almost time for American football, beer, whisky and cigars.

Great post and link. I love the comment left on that website from the former JW. He brings up a point that I have said for some time now, which is that the Watch Tower reasoning on smoking applies to food and obesity.

Why is it a disfellowshipping offense to defile one's flesh with tobacco, but it is ok to defile the flesh with cheeseburgers?

I smoked my first ever anything just a couple years ago. A beautiful cigar that I don't remember the name of. I am a Single Malt girl so I every once in a while a cigar is just that extra treat to take the experience up one notch. My most unforgetable Scotch and Cigar adventure was a hot summer night at low tide in Seal Beach, Ca. We lite cigars, waded into the surf up to our knees and shared a flask of 12yr old. Perfect and amazing.

btw: my daughter was DF'd over a cigar. Not smoking it but a picture of her pretending to smoke it. When asked if she smoked and said No, they produced the photo and promptly DF'd her for lying. She was on her way out anyway so did not dispute their call. That was just one more brick in my own wall to block them out of my life.

@ fade_away, yes...in the congregation I was in, that was the big thing with some of the brothers. Their poker night was sacred. They never played for money, they only used the chips, and they only bit their cigars. They also dressed up...like...they had personas... It was kind of "little boyish". Like they never had fun growing up and needed to make up for it in adulthood...

    Oh...wait...
