Best National Anthem

    Okay, let's do a poll.

Since it looks like many of us are watching the Olympics, let's vote on which country has the best National Anthem.

I love Canada's. I find myself hoping a Canadian will win, so I can sing along to their song.

When the Russians win, I get a cold disquieting feeling, since they adopted the old Soviet anthem again. Too many memories of the old USSR.

During the Sydney 2000 Olympics, I developed a fondness for the Australian anthem "Advance Australia Fair". And here I thought their anthem had been "Waltzing Matilda", LOL.

Australia changed their anthem awhile back. Waltzing Matilda WAS the former one. Come on Aussies, when did they change it?

I like the American one, but there is a move on to change it to God Bless America, which I like much better.

    I noticed that, too.

I thought they (Russia) had done a few Olympics with a different anthem, but one of my co-workers suggested maybe they were entering under the 'Commonwealth' flag. I'm pretty sure it was the Russian flag raised to a different anthem at some point, though.

In any case, I think it sounds pretty good. I have an .mp3 of it being sung by the Red Army Choir. No idea what they are saying (something nefarious, no doubt), but it *sounds* neat.

My favorite anthem is the Olympic Anthem itself, followed by Russia's. Next to Russia, I'd have to pick the US or Brittain's - both are pretty good. I have a pro-US bias, of course. (Whoda thunk 5 years ago, I'd be talking about flags and national anthems positively )

I was watching the Olympics the other night, when they had a discussion about the anthems, and they said that Russia recently adopted the old Soviet anthem.

Can't say I've heard Britain's. Is it God Save the Queen? Same as our "America" ('my country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty')?

Is Russia's anthem the same song as is used in Hunt For Red October? If so, that is my favorite. I love that song, and that movie.

I have to say the US anthem is very moving, but everyone seems to feel pride in their country's anthem.

Waltzing Matilda is a great song, I'm still not so sure it really was the anthem though. If so, got to love the Aussies for their great sense of humor.

Remember when they tried so hard to make Louie Louis the state song of Washington?
