Yes, but what we're trying to help you to realize is that you must ask questions and do research first so that you do not blindly think what THEY think is true.

If you are willing to believe everything they tell you, be willing to change what you believe everytime "new light" comes from the Watchtower magazine. That is why I encouraged you to check into the history of the Watchtower Society. You will be required to believe whatever they claim is truth at the time they say it, then stop believing it when they change the doctrine to something different.

I know whereof I speak. I am a Jehovah's Witness and have been since 1973. At that time, the Watchtower Society was teaching that 1975 would be the time of the end. In fact, a popular speaker had a saying, "Stay alive 'till '75." Later, when nothing happened in 1975, they accused regular JWs of "reading too much into their statements." They changed numerous key doctrines over the years. The most important one was concerning the generation that would see the end. When I was baptised, it was that the ones bornbefore 1914 and at an age of understanding in that year would survive until the end. Later, they stated that it was the ones born in that year. Then, in 1995, they said the "generation" didn't even refer to worshippers of God, but were those unbelievers that would be alive at the time of the end. Later, they changed the teaching to "the overlapping generation" meaning, those who were born in 1914 overlapped into the lives of those today who are annointed and who will survive until the end. Understand? I admit I don't. Please ask your study conductor to clarify, if that's possible.

    Hi DylanBeam

Speaking as an active JW who has been studying for 65+ years my single piece of advice for you is:

    RUN LIKE HELL!

JW's are a dangerous cult that will totally screw up your life. Many like me are still trapped in, you would not believe the difficulty in leaving if you have wife/parents/children/other relatives in.

Empty your mind, empty your mind, ... as a JW you will have limited use for it anyway.

Ask no questions, OBEY OBEY OBEY... you get the picture I'm sure.

Hi DylanBeam, I am what the JW's call an "Interested One." This means I got together with a JW to discuss their beliefs and went to their meetings. You asked how to study the JW publications. In my case, when I would read a JW publication, I made sure to do my fact-checking and compare the publication with outside material on the same subject. I wanted to get all sides of the story, so I read everything I could get my hands on. As far as recommending a specific publication, I would need to know a little more about where you are in this journey.

Here is something to keep in mind: If you go so far as to get baptized as a JW, and then later change your mind and decide you no longer wish to be one, they will do what they call "disfellowshipping" to you. This means all JW's, including your grandmother, will be required to stop speaking with you except for "necessary business."

I enjoyed Raymond Franz' book. He was a member of the small group of men, called the Governing Body, who lead the JW organization. His book, as mentioned by another poster is called "Crisis of Conscience." It's available as a pdf online.

Somehow, I bet Dylan ain't coming back here no mo.

I still think the idea of "seasoning with salt" might be a good idea if the goal is to help someone like Dylan.

Not going to happen. When newbies like Dylan come to the board a pile on is a given. It happens over and over. I do hope he takes the advice of doing a bit more research though I did find his response to Mouthy to be rather telling. He might not be a much as a newbie to the bOrg as he claims.
