I slowly faded also, so I cannot pin down a "first thing I did" over a long course of time.
But when I realized I had to leave WTS, one of the first things I did was tell a couple of my non-JW family about my problem so that I wouldn't chicken out and remain a JW.
That year, while still attending meetings, they sent me a birthday gift. It was awesome to get my birthday back.

I signed my kids up for the Boy Scouts, borrowed the Harry Potter books from the library, and begged my husband to grow his beard in.

Not much changed for me...My wife and I were already going into porn shops and cussing and being open minded. We did however openly say happy birthday and Merry Christmas to people. even in front of jw family and friends.
