Sulla- Formal education is valuable, religious belief puts caps on what is acceptable especially with regard to science. Look how the Popes fought astronomy. The GB are in a losing situation denying college to its members and they have ended up with a church of their making.
On the subject of medical advise from the Watchtower my maternal grandfather, who was a Bible Student and then a JW, was fascinated by all types of unorthodox and unproven medical remedies. Reading the Golden Age and Awake rant on mainstream medicine tends to bring out the occult in a person. I was surprised to read about Russell's condition usually vegetarians don't have that particular problem.
Designs - my wife's family are Tennessee JWs. The grandmother, in addition to having an unusual number of stories about bootleggers in the family, owned a wide array of 1950s hill-people JW health viewpoints. But, like Foucault's Pendulum, conspiracy enthusiasts turn out not to be particularly discriminating in their consumption of conspiracy theories.
