"Turned out that they actually lived most of the year in regular society, and just did the primative tribe act when the reporters and archeologists came to observe them...." James_Woods

    That sounds very interesting, James_Woods....

Can you point me to an article on that situation??

Also, if that was the case, was there ever a follow-up study done on them, to see how they chose their "primitive tribal" act? Did they just make it up out of "whole cloth", or did they base it on some actual memories of their ancestors' methods of surviving under more primitive conditions???

James_Woods, that is a "tragedy beyond words", because a VERY ancient way of life - that we could learn MUCH from - is going extinct.
The question would be - how to study such a way of life, without altering it?? [An old "Star TreK TNG" episode comes to mind...]

    Yes, I see your point.

But I was just speculating that perhaps these people would really be better off in the year 2012 with flush toilets, modern medicine, communications, and so on...

I kind of got the creepy feeling that we moderns sort of like to "observe" people like this as if they were exhibits in a zoo for our amusement.

Petroglyphs were discovered on their land, gives some idea how ancient they are.

That doesn't mean they drew them. I've seen petroglyphs in S. America that aren't from any living people in the area.

Well, perhaps it's the result of our own modern lives, wherein the government, major corporations, and in some cases, certain intrusive religious groups can look at our voting habits, spending habits, and medical procedures that we choose to have....

In many ways, we "moderns" are more "under the microscope" than primitive tribes....

Perhaps that's another reason to study them...

To sigh in envy at their relatively unobserved lives...

Purely from memory, Zid - I think I saw the expose on the story on an episode of 60 minutes. The hoax was perpetuated by the authors of the original article, who paid the "tribe members" to act out the part. It was discovered years later when another (innocent) team tried to do a follow-up on the first story. I might be able to find them on the internet if I could remember the name that NatGeo gave to the tribe.

Rather like the South Sea Islands anthropology fraud by Margaret Meade -

Tasaday was the name of the tribe.

    "The Tribe That Never Was"

They've since taken up jobs in Disney World's Jungle Cruise ride.
