Band on the Run
It seemed as tho half my Kingdom Hall was on disability benefits. They could not work but they could special pioneer. I don't think I could ever live the way they did. Everything was substandard. My parents both worked full time. She was criticized but looked straight in the JW male's eyes and said, I work to put food on the table.
I was wearing rags. Part of getting working papers was having access to Walmart and Target type clothes. It was heady for me. My father had to lend money to these deadbeats. The teenage girls walked in with leather boots, nice handbags, Macy's type clothes. Rather than get my hair styled and see a film, our resources went to them. Then, they refused to pay on the note.

I called my older sister who works for the government, she reviews claims and knows the highest disability claims are around $1,200 a month. How can these Elders live off this kind of poverty. Florida's Welfare is close to $12 bucks a day, if they are on public assistance, they are still dead broke. I know one elder who is 76 who is still working, he took Social Security at 70 years old for the higher amount. He is working 30 hours a week roofing, while performing elder obligations. His home is open to his nephews, nieces whom are broke, and he helps them. He is a class act, who should be of the annoited, his actions scream "CHRISTIAN SHEPPERD.". Brother Roofer is getting $1800 a month in Social Security for 60 years of self employment. Our local Fire Chief is getting $120,000 a year, for twenty eight years of work, I doubt any JW Elder is making a killing on Welfare. The Max benifit is close to $2500 is you hit the highest threshold and wait until age 72 or like Greenspan age 80.

it's true that you don't live that well on welfare or benefits but some JWs get round that by getting another JW to live in their spare room and pay half their rent and bills. Then they get all the glory for 'helping out a needy brother' . Sorted.

PALMTREE & BANDONTHERUN: Even thought most JWs are hard-working, I did see types like you described who just DID not want to work and found ways to get benefits. I wouldn't give shit to anybody like this!

TOTH
Both of my wife's brothers were elders at one point. My wife is the eldest and the middle child was a "Welfare Bear". He was a full time pioneer and elder, raising two kids at the time and on food stamps, welfare, and Medi-Cal (California's version of Medicaid.) He did NO work for years like this. finally his wife spurred him on because she wanted a BIG house full of material things. so now he works two jobs, she works one job and screws her boss. Well she got caught screwing him once upon a time. Funny how she was never censured or disfellowshipped or anything.

This may sound a bit far-fetched to some:
An elder, living in Arkansas in the 70's, fit this description. While he occasionally did some janitorial work, his main souce of income was the small stipend for living expenses for those going to school on the G.I. Bill. He also qualified for USDA Food Stamps for himself, his wife and daughter. He convinced the superintendent of a small, rural elementary school to allow him to complete the 5th and 6th grades, although he was 45 when he started. He was kept apart from the regular student population, received his daily assignments and did his work in a small study near the front office. After completing two years of study, he approached the superintendent again with his desire to "brush up on the basics", a thinly veiled plan to continue his government assistance. That was denied.
He was later accepted at a nearby vocational school which continued his veteran's educational benefits, eventually taking nearly every course offered including air conditioning and heating, landscaping and a nursing course. He was very open with the congregation and the traveling brothers about his means of support, was used at the circuit level for assembly parts and as a department head.
One could argue that his pre-JW military service qualified him for the educational benefits, but he blatantly abused the system.
