I started a thread on self esteem. Many seem to appreciate it. A few did not. Since I consider this an important subject I am going to try this again. This time I will ask some questions and ask for your comments.

    1. As children we were told many things about ourselves. Some good, some bad. Which of these do you believe, the good ones or the bad ones, and why?

    2. Today, what is the source of your self esteem? is it:

    a. what others told you when you where a child.

    b. what others tell you now.

    c. what your successes and failures tell you about yourself.

    d. what you tell yourself about yourself.

I am interested in what you think on this most important subject.

    Larc,

I'm too neurotically distracted by the fact that this thread is in the "TV and Movies, Sci-Fi and Video Games" forum to reply.

    Ginny,

Forever Jung, not that was down write clever. I think Bob Dylan wrote that and Jung was down right goofy by the way.

You know something? You are more than just another pretty face, so face it.

Okay Larc, old buddy. I'll have a go at your questions.

    1. My parents, mostly Mama, told me only good things....

    I was smart.

    I was a good student.

    I was handsome.

    I could.

    I would.

    I should.

That I was no better and no worse than anyone else.

The only comment she ever said that could be construed as "negative" was when I was acting up and she said, "you're just like your daddy." (they didn't get along). As I've matured, I've come to find that she was right even about that. I *am* a lot like him in many ways, but as my sister Debbie told me not long ago, I am his kid, so what did Mama expect?

As for which of these things I believed... I believed them all. Even the one about my dad – though it hurt me to hear it back then.

    2. What is the source of my self-esteem today? I'd have to say "d" – what I tell me about me.

I apparently did believe some of the bad things, like 'you talk too much'. Realizing that these judgements of others are highly subjective, I now believe primarily the good things, and even those I take with a grain of salt.

I usually take praise as a stimulus to evaluate how in the future I could display more of the quality in question.

    2. Today, what is the source of your self esteem?

what I tell myself about myself.

    Yeppers!

Success and failure is a good way to evaluate how to accomplish your goals and what should be your priorities (things you are good at), but it's not a good place to put your self-esteem.

    No, no, no.

But I confess I do make that mistake often also. For example, I know I am a kind and caring person, which is based on success dealing with others compassionately. But I suppose that's better than putting all my self-esteem in my intellect or ego.

It's official. Larc has lost his mind. Amusing though.
