Whitney's songs played at my prom, which I was allowed to attend. Both my parents loved school dances, and they wanted me to attend the prom. No, I wasn't allowed to date until I was 18 . .. . but I was allowed to go with a friend to the prom. So, Whitney's songs are really good memories to me. "I want to dance with somebody . . . " Those were teenaged years, in the mid 80s. Bubble gum songs to match my neon shirts and parachute pants.
Then, in the early 90s, I was a twenty-something and saw Bodyguard. Wow, what a voice. Whitney and I had both grown up. So, Whitney became a breathtaking singer to me, just because of her voice. I'd like to remember her that way.
But, somewhere in the 90s, Whitney went, abused by her thug husband. Toni Braxton was the next rage. I bought Toni's CDs and became a Toni fan.
And, eventually Whitney's light didn't grow brighter. She lost her voice, due to hard living. I know of a person who met her, and didn't have good things to say about Ms. Houston. Basically, Bobbie Brown was her match.
I don't want to think about that. I just want to go back to that movie theater that showed Bodyguard. Both Whitney and I had more brains and taste then we did in the 80s. But, hey, isn't "I want to dance with somebody" a catch toon? Perhaps she's dancing in heaven with Ray Charles?
TMZ is reporting that her last song was with Prince. Maybe she'll dance in Paradise?
