ok that's the kind of crap that just screams cult to me. There isn't a single scripture that tells you to help the weak and sick only if they believe exactly as u do, today.

Good morning!
I just had to weigh in on this discussion. As a former JW and the father of children who are extremely loyal to the Watchtower Society, I may at some point in my life (hopefully decades from now!) find myself in the position of needing their help.
So when I read this quote from the Kingdom Ministry that was quoted above "For example, a disfellowshiped parent may be sick or no longer able to care for himself financially or physically. The Christian children have a Scriptural and moral obligation to assist. (1 Tim. 5:8)," I could feel my blood pressure go up! :)
I have read this quote before and it really angers me. Why in the heck is it these 'Christian children's' scriptural and moral obligation to assist a sick, elderly parent (don't get me wrong, I am glad they can at least do that much!), but prior to that sickness, at least according to the Watchtower, there appears to be NO SCRIPTURAL OR MORAL obligation to show any form of 'honor' to their parent by checking in to see how their parent is doing (but instead they must treat their parent as DEAD)??? Maybe if these children had checked in on their parent, the parent wouldn't have gotten sick to begin with...
Talk about the Watchtower Society twisting things for their own purposes.
Thanks for letting me vent!

Good point Expanded. I never thought of it from that angle before. And if these parents were such an extreme spiritual danger to their children for all those years, have they suddenly become benign? Or were they never a threat all along?

Possibly the $$? If one continues to be abandoned by your children during sickness, is one likely to leave their inheritance to their children who have abandoned them? Or possibly because it would make the ORG look like the cult it is by not caring for one's sick parents??

Display Christian Loyalty
a Scriptural and moral obligation to assist.
The choice of words speaks volumes. They ask for "Loyalty" (to the Watchtower). They say to meet your "Obligation" (the minimum requirement).
"Charity" (doing all you can for those in need) is conspicuously absent.

Thanks so much for the imput on this subject. What I find disturbing is that the elders and the WTS can't decide if they are fish or fowl. On one hand that take the hard line of no contact at all, but as On the Way Out put it, which is so dead on!!!!! that when it comes to reaching out to help ones they recoil and pass the buck laying the responsibility on the family that has been told to not have contact. Is it just me or am I confused. In my case I will meet my christian conscience driven responsibilities and take care of my own. Can you just imagine if Christ was faced with this same situation? In light of the fact he freely gave his life for the bunch of us that he did and does not know, how can the elders and the WTS justify such cruel treatment and abandon? Don't answer that, sadly I know the answer.
