Well, my plans are to keep working in my parent's bakery. After my father retires in about 5 years I will take over the business and place my roommate Eliud as the manager. I will buy a Blockbuster franchise and spend most of my time running it. Oh, and I plan to get married and have a family.

Just ONE Blockbuster? I would rethink that by theway. New movie services will soon be providing movies straight to your tv for low prices. Rent a movie for 2 bucks, it stays on your box for a day. The days of Blockbuster etc. etc. are numbered. :( Sorry. How bout a McDonalds?

    Gil,

I hate rain on your parade, but I agree with Naeblis and OUTLAW. In five years, video rentals will be a thing of the past. I will give you an example. Until three months ago, I had one HBO channel. My cable company upgraded and now I get 12 movie channels for the same price, plus a whole bunch of other new channels.

A question: why would you want to turn over the management of a business you know about to manage a business you don't know?

In my area, the number of bakeries are increasing, especially the ones that offer unique upscale products. Video stores are on the decline. A friend of mine who owned a video store told me that this would happen. He was ahead of his time in seeing this trend.

Yeah, if you kept it quiet who you were you could make a killing on chocolate doughnuts when the JW's take their morning coffee break.

I know you could have made a living off me alone!

P.S. The world does not need another Bank, Gas Station, Video Store, but a bakery, now thats a different story!

gil, just glad you are trying to get your thoughts and life sorted out. take your time, don't rush. make decisions which are going to benefit you in the long run, not just bring you temporary relief.
try to take the time to plan and do things the right way (learned from naeb ).
    good luck

Wow, guys I never really thought that I should build another bakery! No matter how much I have tried to get away from the bakery business in the last 12 years, it keeps coming back to me!

Now, you think I should scrap my plans to own a brothel in Nevada!?

    Gil,

It is hard to give advice because you don't tell us much detail. Now, you say you don't like the business. In that case, you should explore other options. You do have five years to formulate a plan.

    I have some questions.

    1. Do you now work full time at the bakery or do you have other employment, and if so, what is it?

    2. Do you have any education beyond high school? If not, I would suggest that you take some college classes in business over the next five years.

    3. If you hired someone to manage the bakery, where would you get the money to start another business?

    4. Given that video rental stores will still be viable in 5 years, what attracts you about this business?

Ok, larc let me answer your questions:

    1. I work full time at the bakery.

    2. I have tried to go to college on (believe it or not!) five occasions, but I have a very short attention spand. I am reading several books on economics and business.

    3. Where would I get the money? I don't know!

    4. I have always liked movies. I am the biggest movie geek!

As for my love/hate relationship for the business. Well, I love the business, because my Dad owns it, so it can easily take over it some day. However, I feel that I have to prove myself. I sometimes see it as my father business not my own.
