The WT logo itself appears to have some solar connection, notice the circle behind it. Take a look at ancient xian art and you will always have a solar orb behind Jesus.

The Sun dies in winter and at that time the southern cross happens to be behind it. After it fails to rise for three days it begins to travel up. THis is of course the true origin of XMAS. The primary motivation i believe that the WTS wants to enforce that JC died on a stake and not a cross, has nothing to do with honesty its about breaking the connection between the solar saviour dying on the cross. By asserting that this cross myth was introduced at a later stage they can pretend there is less solar myth connection.

The precise year of Jesus' birth , which some historians place between 7 and 2 BC, is unknown. [13] [14] By the early-to-mid 4th century, Western Christianity had placed Christmas on December 25, a date later adopted in the East. [15] [16] The date of Christmas may have initially been chosen to correspond with the day exactly nine months after the Annunciation , the date Christians believe Jesus to have been conceived, [17] as well as the date of the Roman winter solstice , which Christians consider to be the "Sun of righteousness" prophesied in Malachi 4:2. The winter solstice may have been immensely important because communities were not certain of living through the winter, and had to be prepared during the previous nine months. Starvation was common in winter between January and April, also known as the famine months. In temperate climates, the midwinter festival was the last feast celebration, before deep winter began. Most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter, so it was almost the only time of year when a supply of fresh meat was available. The majority of wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking at this time. The concentration of the observances were not always on the day commencing at midnight or at dawn, but the beginning of the pre-Romanized day, which falls on the previous eve. [7]
Since the event is seen as the reversal of the Sun's ebbing presence in the sky, concepts of the birth or rebirth of sun gods have been common and, in cultures using winter solstitially based cyclic calendars, the year as reborn has been celebrated with regard to life-death-rebirth deities or new beginnings such as Hogmanay's redding, a New Year cleaning tradition. In Greek mythology, the gods and goddesses met on the winter and summer solstice, and Hades is permitted to enter Mount Olympus (his domain is the underworld so he of course does not get accepted any other time). Also reversal is yet another usual theme as in Saturnalia's slave and master reversals.
