I remember “special” meetings happened fairly regularly back in the early 90’s. They would have a special movie or footage of a project being played. I remember a few photo slide shows being showed and narrated by some chief of the dirty shorts tribe.

I liken all “special” meetings to fine-tuned propaganda campaigns. A big tent revival in the windowless church, and by invite only so as to re enforce the social structure and hierarchy of the congregations.

The last Special Talk I went to 2 yr.s ago the Sunday after Memorial by the CO was same ol same ol,,mostly slamming higher education,,when it was done I felt like I totally wasted my Sunday morning,,and actually that was the last meeting I have attended,,,about a week later I meant one of the sister's I grew up with at the food store and she was also upset by the talk because she was almost finished with her teaching degree and we discussed the higher education slamming stance and she totally disagrees with they're stand on that ( and she is a still active sister)....so I think more people 40 and younger that are still active are getting tired of this old school thinking

When I was in a Bethel Congregation we had special meetings all the time. It was just to make us feel special I think

If it is on the 21st of April or there abouts it is a zone visit for Canada. Our congregation is NOT invited but a neigh boring one is invited and I herd it from one of their elders.

One of the governing body is supposed to speak and it is a closed circuit televised event from the branch I guess they will pack as many as they can into the assembly hall.

I suppose some of you are right too it will be another opportunity for them to beg for more donations

Sounds like that is the event. How exciting.....

I am sure the"need" for more money will come up

I recall driving 6 god damn hours away to go to a "special" meeting about 10 years ago. With gas money, a hotel and eating out I was very shortly $200 lighter in the wallet. There wasn't a damn thing that was special about that meeting except that a GB member was there. Literally everyone in attendance freaked out and imagined that his presence was like Pentecost all over again. Finally I recall being reminded twice by two different elders of the need to make a donation because we were the "beloved beneficiaries" of such a wonderful provision. Yeah....I think "special meetings" double as money makers and also morale and zeal boosters. After all.....HOW EXCITING! Not EVERYONE was chosen!

In developped countries they could arrange these easily based on local attendance with modern technology, but ofcourse you would not feel the closeness to mighty ones and the gates of the gratitude might not open in equal level. Of course there are also costs involved when arranging this kind of couple of hours events.
