great article Paul - thanks.
One 'discovery' that really helped me during my exit was learning for the first time about where the JW''s sit in the family tree of Christian sects
The information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restorationism_(Christian_primitivism) is very relevant and some of these facts might be well suited in the 'Not Unique' section
Thanks buddy!
Has it ever been presented in the form of a tree diagram? That would be interesting.
Excellent article, Paul
Speak of the Devil, Slim. I just came across this tree by accident.
Thanks Black Sheep for that. Apparently, according to this flow diagram (or tree) Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christadelphians, among others, do not exist. Puzzling omissions - or would their presence make the diagram look too messy? I suspect the diagram was formulated by some one who did not consider so-called cults or sects worth including. Nitpickers in my view.
BTW, it is more accurate to have the 7th-Day Adventists emerging from the Millerite movement who were also often referred to as Adventists. But Millerites aren't even mentioned! Indeed, Chuck Russell was open about the fact that some of his early interpretations of the Bible were influenced by the Millerite movement. The link in the diagram between the Baptists and the 7th-Day Adventists is misleading. To be even pickier, how come the diagram implies the origins of the Anabaptists is distinct from the origins of the Baptists - two groups that are very closely linked historically?
Oh dear. The poor widdle Dubs didn't make the chart. They didn't make onto two others I found either.
I'm probably not the right person to say this, but I don't see any Coptic churches in that three :-). Even so, the tree serves the purpose of showing just how many churches there are out there.
bump for the original topic - start a new thread for that tree stuff....
If it doesn't already exist I think it could be well worth drawing up a tree diagram that put JWs in their place.
