We're currently under a Tornado Warning but the cell looks like will miss us and stay south. After that we should be out of the woods. Helluva storm though.

spent an hour of so in the bathroom with the cats and medications we take, pillows and ID's. Watching others on TV pick up what was left of their home- made me just want to kiss the ground. When you are younger you can handle these bumps in the road easier. It would be scary now and we'd have to have help and that really bothers both me and Mr. V. One of my spawn has been checking in on us all day. Seems the roles are reversed now.

on top of it all, I was 2 days late paying the insurance this month and had to call to make sure we were still covered .there is no grace period. The polices say that if the payment is late they cannot guarantee coverage. Insurance companies are are brutal. We were OK, they confirmed receipt of payment and acceptance of it. 20 yrs paying insurance and late one time and a tornado blows through.

    glad everyone is ok

That is not just funny, it's Sofa King Funny!lol

I know what you mean about younger people being able to handle things easier. I feel really sorry for those who had their homes destroyed. I know that it is especially hard for older ones who often have a hard time adjusting to change, let alone a total upheaval of their lives. My thoughts go out to those who don't have a home to go back to tonight.

You are a sweet guy, OCB. I always read your posts b/c they are the voice of reason. I sometimes post when i am angry- I have got to stop doing that.

Yes I call my kids my spawn , not sure which sci/fy movie that started me to using that, most likely Star Trek .

I too am sending up a prayer or positive energy for those who are sifting through what is left of their possessions. I am sure they are grateful to be alive .

lol I just looked at a SNL clip of sofa king, the three guys that look like their spawn remind me of the old SNL" wild and crazy Czechoslovakian " guys with Steve martin and Dan Aykroyd.

There was a loud noise like the rockets were coming again and then I peed my pants. Fortunately it was raining really hard.

Hope all of you are safe...

I need to check on my Texas friend. She lives north-east of the Dallas area...

"Yup, just got out of the stairwells here, too..." Hemp Lover
"I hate the fact that we don't have any shelters in arlington and these homes are not built tornado safe..." Heathen
"There are no basements in texas , I already told you there's no shelters anywhere and the homes are not equipped for it." Heathen, page 2
"We have our tub ready, flash lights, shoes, coats, pillows, blankets & mattress at the ready..." Rabbit, page 2
"..spent an hour of so in the bathroom with the cats and medications we take, pillows and ID's..." Viola page 3

    Okay, a few questions here...

How do they build "tornado safe" buildings??? With steel-rod-reinforced and cement poured into the cores of cement-block construction? With dual walls and some sort of impact-absorbing, cushioning material between the inner and outer walls???

Are the stairwells built extra-strong, to function as tornado shelters???

I'd like to see every 'single-family' dwelling in Tornado Alley have a core "safe" room - built like a bomb shelter or war bunker with LOTS of steel and concrete - AND one shelter per 20 - 30 families in EVERY TRAILER PARK in Tornado Alley, too...

But the human race is so short-sighted, most of the time. Just out of curiosity, all you Texans, are there ANY building codes/laws in place that require such super-strong cores built into the houses? And what about the trailer parks??

Actually, oddly enough, one of the women interviewed in Arlington had gone into her basement to weather the storm. She said that many of the houses in her development had basements.

But that is unusual in the extreme for Texas.

As I understand it, the water table is high enough in eastern Texas to prevent basement construction...

However, as one moves from the eastern area of Texas to western Texas, the depth that the water table sinks to, allows basement construction.

I'd guess that there are areas where the water table and underlying geology allows basements, scattered around throughout the central Texas area...?

Well, here's a website that discusses tornado-resistant [I think they call them 'tornado-proof' ] homes, including conventional, cement-walled AND earth-bermed - my favorite!!

    http://www.adobemachine.com/tornadoproof.htm

Here's an article by "Popular Mechanics" - but it only discusses strengthening conventional construction....

    http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/survival/tips/how-to-make-a-more-tornado-resistant-home-7148806

And although most people don't like concrete as a home-building material, that is the direction I would go in, especially as combined with earth-berming, one can construct some of the strongest, most natural-disaster resistant, and energy-efficient homes around...

    http://architecture.about.com/cs/buildyourhouse/a/concretehomes.htm

    Not to mention, termite-proof...
