I disagree, Mary.
Try being single, and over 40,, and you will see how many women don't like you b/c they are insecure. Men don't ask you out, for fear of being rejected. All this I have been told,,, after the person really got to know me, and realized that I didn't consider myself 'special' or 'good-looking'.
I also had one boss tell me I got the job (exec. admin. for an engineering company) because I was the best-looking applicant. I told him "Well, you got lucky then, because I am also the best at my job."
Looks can make a difference in how people perceive you.
