FS, I was kinda thinking that, too,,, 12 YO and all,,, but my childhood was so messed up and suicidal, that I can't comment on how a 'normal' 12 YO would feel.

Unhappiness comes when your personal reality isn't living up to the standards held by your personal belief system.
People who beleive it should be sunny most of the time become depressed on cloudy days while to those who don't hold that belief, it's just another day.

I'll flip the question for a minute. What makes you happy?
I've done some reading lately (what else is new?) and it has been reinforced for me that happiness is not merely the absence of pain. Elimination of misery will only get you to neutral (Plato).
You might be interested in the findings of positive psychology.
