Does Anyone Know Anything About a New Request for Black Sisters at Bethel?

Is there some unspoken rule against black sisters wearing braids? I studied with a young black woman, who eventually got baptized. She was like a daughter to me and even called me mama at times. I guess that's gone now. ANYWAY, she got braids and I thought she was as cute as a button. She was young, carefree, and the braids really flattered her. But our cong. was mostly white, and a pioneer sis came to me and asked me if I had spoken to her about her hair! WHAT? I just shrugged and said I think she looks beautiful. It doesn't look extreme to me.

I think she got 'counselled' by this sister, because suddenly the braids disappeared and she seemed a little sad. I wanted to ask her about it, but since she didn't offer, I didn't want her to feel embarrassed.

However she did live with me for a little while, and I have to say, I was just AMAZED at the time she spent on her hair! I would tease her a bit about it, because she had a great sense of humor, but truly, the braids were much less trouble. They took an intial time investment, but then day to day, she could just get ready quickly.

Anyway. Those are my thoughts. What do they have against braids?

Too ghetto? Not IMHO by the way.

I wonder if all the black sisters are stocking up on their creamy crack for after Armageddon? Or are they planning to loot all the beauty supply stores after the Big A ?

She didn't look ghetto at all. It had never occured to me that braids were some sort of problem until I was told to talk to her and refused. I think they just didn't like it and missed when she used to just straighten it. That didn't stop them from getting horrible perms that did nothing for them.

Maybe I'm not a good judge of these things. My hair is super straight, and years ago I decided to just quit fighting it. I go for simple now. I thought her braids simplified things for her (excluding braiding day---that was brutal). They also used to 'counsel' her on some of her speech and I think they just wanted her to be white. I probably don't see her like others do simply because I always found her very cute and funny and only corrected speech issues when she specifically asked me. I never thought she sounded bad.

*sniff* All this talk is really making me miss her. I try not to think about it, but she really was an adopted daughter to me. She got married recently. f**king cult.

I think straightened hair on black women looks unnatural. I admire their naturally curly hair and I think an afro looks great.

Well, maybe some former Bethelites could verify this for me. But,I heard that the Bethel salon or whatever it's called won't use hair color on anyone's hair under 40. I forget the reason. But,I think they feel that hair color should only be used to cover over gray hair. I feel bad for those under 40 who prematurely gray. Anyway, not sure if it's true, but I did hear about it from someone who has family at Bethel.

So,then,it wouldn't surprise me if they made a similiar request ,or command for the black sisters. But,I think it is going over and beyond the things written.

All the petty stuff this religion focuses on amazes me. Maybe Loesh,or however you spell his name,is using all the hair care products,so they're high in demand, lol.

Indeed, I bet Loesh has a standing appt at the Bethel salon for his dye, wash & set.

The acceptance of braided styles depends on the area the cong is located. I've attended congs in the inner city & suburbia; most discouragment came from the suburban folks. Until recently, sisters with braids, locs or twists could'nt give parts on the CA & DA level.

I have no idea but would not be surprised. They are disproportionately represented at Bethel and most of Watchtower European braches.

    Huh?

Or are you suggesting that there's too many French JWs at the French Bethel, or there's too many Italians at the Italian Bethel? We should replace them with African-Americans instead?
