I think the article was generally reasonable in its assessment of religious belief/practice in Britain. But the journo who wrote it confused the regular knocking on the front door by a JW with "fervour".

JW's do not exhibit fervour, unless it is 3 Elders DFing a perceived Apostate.

Nor do JW's fit this description "People who are religious in a counter-cultural way know what they believe, and could argue it out with people who disagree."

JW's cannot explain what they do believe, let alone defend it.

For these reasons the JW's in Britain are as much an anachronism that will fade away as is the Church of England itself, for different reasons.

    Viva La Britan!

Apologies to all Brits here. Meant it in the most complimentary way. No offence to Frenchmen/Spaniards either.

Thank all that's nice that, at least, one country's got it right and is moving in the right direction!!

Thought you Brits, who probably make up 1/2 of all those who post here, would have a say or two about this article. It's indeed interesting no matter if we come from the UK or not.

You secular folks might have left religion, but those ancient beautiful churches remain. Great for tourists to see and spend their money while doing so. I know we did. It was the amazing architecture we loved, not the religion. We were JWs then.

Yes our ecclesiastical architecture is amazing.

I have an 11th century church just a couple of miles from where I am sitting now.

Secularism need not stifle economic growth, as witness the case of China, whose economy is outperforming both those of Europe and America - and yet (according to that Win-Gallup poll) whose population is at least 60% atheist.

Not, too, that the percentage of China's population that identified themselves as atheist (60%) far exceeds that of Britain's (13%). That would strongly suggest that the British population has retained a belief in God, but has had a complete fill of religion (I wonder why!)

Thanks for this informative article, the Guardian site is a great news source I'm there just about every day.

I do though disagree with the view on the U.S. Constitution which is in my view a primary contributor to democracy through representative government, solid civil rights, as well as disallowing other abuses of the time. If it is revered it is because it is an anchor without which such a varied, continually changing, and vast country might find itself lost at sea. It brings us back to our roots though not often enough.
