I don't consider "Lord have mercy" a southern thing, I say it all the time, however, the "yes sir, yes Ma'am" thing is definitely a Southern thing, Kids are taught to say that while growing up in Southern/Midwest area. In Cali and NY just to name two states, I think if I child is taught to say that today must mean their parents are from the South.

My grandmother was from Shreveport, LA. I've only heard black folks say "lord have mercy" out here in California. I've never heard any other ethnic group out here use that phrase. Since my grandmother came from the south I totally consider it to a southern thing.
