Very few of the witnesses I knew, or members of any organised religion really, could fairly be decribed as stupid or mindless.
In some ways it seems easier to understand born-ins as they are shaped from birth to fit in with the this religion. They usually know no different and perhaps many won't consider alternatives unless some life-event makes them consider their position. This seems to me to be human nature - as mentioned above.
Those who are recruited usually join for a reason - either already religious (as was I) and therefore already accepting the Bible (say) as an authority- from there it can be an easy task to demolish one set of beliefs and replace them WTS doctrine. In my own case, I was young, vulnerable and had no easy way to challenge what the witnesses were showing me. Bingo! Or they have some spiritual need and unfortunately JWs get to them with their slick patter, fear tactics and love bombing.
I think it is a lot easier now to research the background to the JWs than it was in the 80s and 90s. Also, my own thinking processes and critical thinking skills have definitely developed from what they were when I was a green 18 year old Catholic.

I think the proper JW recipe should read:
1/3 Idiot (Can be substituted with Naive, Gullible or Vulnerable)
1/3 Laziness (Can be substituted with Absent Mindedness, Inflexibility or Stubbornness)
1/3 Fear (No Substitutions)
Season with a pinch of over exaggerated self worth, puffed up pride or any other asshole blend.
Mix well and let stew untouched for years
Viola, you are on your way to becoming the perfect JW.
WARNING: Using substitutions may not yield desired product, for best results only use original ingredients.

Disillusioned Lost-Lamb: I like your three-part model of what could lead an individual to become interested in and subscribe to Watchtower beliefs: Equal parts naivete, mental inflexibility (e.g., unable or unwilling to think critically) and a fear-based outlook. You show a pretty good understanding of humannature

Thanks steve2 , people really aren't that hard to figure out if you just observe and pay attention.
BTW: I am an avid spectator in the sport of people watching.
Cheers

Yes, people and their patterns of behavior are endlessly fascinating. Observing the way some people become stuck in their life and all they do is keep trying to do the same old stuff that has not worked up until now and is unlikely ever to work. But they keep going round and round and round the unending loop. I like to see people reach a point where they say, "This ain't working. I really need to try to do something different" and then do it.
