Brit is just an abbreviation of the word British so I don't see how anyone could be offended by the term.
That didnt work out well for me in 1st grade when I called the Japanese Nips....short for Nippon. Something tells me I had watched to many World War II movies that weekend.

Brits is fine.
Please don't use "English" as a generic label though.
Britain or "The United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland" refers to Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
I'm Scottish but also proud of the UK. Slimboyfat will be along to do a Braveheart on me in a minute :)
P.S. In this context Ireland refers only to Northern Ireland. Southern Ireland or Eire is an independent country and not part of the UK.
