Help me out here. How many decades has it been since the witnesses (or ever) have received this level of worldwide media attention .

I think this is a watershed moment . These news websites will be up there for a LONG time. This is the LARGEST to date dollar amount for a single case of

child sex abuse A WORLD RECORD.The way the media used to work a story would just fade. Now as soon as a pioneer leaves the householders door

they walk right over to the computer and a very simple google search will present them with "the truth about the truth" . Isn't the internet great.

It seems this is still smaller press than the Dateline NBC thing from years back.

The WTS will throw its veil of silence over this affair and try to wish it away into the cornfield. Don't expect anything about the case to be printed in any of the organization's official organs nor will it be mentioned from the speaker's platform. Their modus operandi for decades has been to use silence and secrecy to smother negative developments. It has worked very well in the past and so they will assume they should employ the same tactic now.

There is a big difference, however, which might upset WTS calculations: the Internet. People no longer depend on hard copy newspaper, magazines, and pamphlets for information. They are also turning less and less to telvised news programs. The Internet has emerged as the preferred news source for many, especially the younger generation. The Internet is something the WTS has feared and fought against since it burst on the scene nearly twenty years ago and even today the Society has a love/hate relationship with the medium. They have absolutely no control over it and their small presence in cyberspace is more than dwarfed by others, including their opposers, who can easily drown out the WTS voice.

If this religion ever implodes, the Internet will have played a major role in its demise. Early reactions in places like Facebook show that Witnesses are trying to push back vigorously against the negative publicity this story has already generated. They are also saying all the things others have cited in earlier posts on this thread. It remains to be seen if the pushback efforts of individual Witnesses will retard the mushrooming opposition this story will generate, but I think more than anything individual Witnesses are taking to the Internet to close ranks with other devout Witnesses. They may well succeed in that if these early reactions are any indication.

I had hoped that any pushback would be directed against the WTS itself as sincere Witnesses demanded an accounting from the Governing Body about the policies that led to the verdict and awards in California. My hopes of that happening are fading, but there might still be a chance that if and as other similar cases come to light their cumulative effect will bring this cult and its leaders to their knees. I want to see a "Watchtower Spring" and while I think winter still reigns, I will continue to hope that eventually the right will prevail.

Quendi: I agree. The Internet is the JW's worst enemy. It is a place that those wanting information can visit with out being found out. Sites like this allow questions to be asked and answered with out being detected. Knowlege is power and a voice heard is liberating. There will be a spin as to who or what is to blame. The molestation will be discounted or down right denied, and the Society will be the victim.

I know personally of 5 girls beginning at age 5 up to 27 who have been molested, raped,fondled, and verbally advanced upon sexually within the cong. I was one of those. Yet nothing was ever done about it. The code of silence has been in place for a long time but hopefully this incident will open the doors to the truth as it really is.

Interesting when a new technology makes old technology obsolete. Business plans are trashed, happens all the time.

The case won't be mentioned in JW literature. There might be a passing reference to 'the media' being 'part of Satan's world'.

It would not surprise me if, in the near future, some talk outline at Circuit or District Assemblies has a statement about how Satan must know how close the end is, because he has turned up the persecution with a multitude of frivolous lawsuits against WTS. "But they all get overturned eventually."
