At your age, your life is an open book- you might become a bank manager, a policeman, a male stripper, or anything you want. A tat might limit those options. And if you get 'Jane' tattooed onto your arm, and you marry a 'Sandra', then you've got some explaining to do, lol !

If you don't get "Jane" but get something personal, explaining later to Sandra just means telling her why that symbol was important to you at that stage of life.
I am not a tattoo-getting person, but I don't see the big deal if others enjoy something permanent as a statement or a work of art.

If a tat is what you really want , and your of age then go for it
I, would think long and hard on such a permanent thing
Trust, with age comes wisdom, and more than likely, as time
goes by you will come to see that tat in a different light one day

I agree, I wouldn't want to get it anywhere it couldn't be easily covered up. However, i think if I were to become a male stripper, a tattoo probably wouldn't limit my options.
I was only planning on the one tattoo of Joe Strummer smashing the guitar. I don't think there will ever come a time when I will dislike Joe Strummer so I don't think my fondness and appreciation for it would go away with age. The music he played has lots of meaning for me personally so there is more to it to me than just a cool looking image (though I do think it looks cool). I would never get the name of a girl tattoo'd.
You do make some good points that anybody getting a tattoo should think about.
