Does anyone remember the short lived seiries called "Salvage" which ran in 79? I really liked that show as a kid:

Yes, I remember Salvage-1. He had a red & black Bugatti type 57 that they restored.

On a darker side - remember the B&W movie he made - "A face in the crowd".

Some said that that was really closer to his off-screen personality than Andy of Mayberry.

I think that Hallmark has an all-day Matlock marathon on the 4th of July.

They will probably have several more this year now that he has passed on.

As someone who has lived in the Deep South, I thought Andy Griffith's portrayal of Mayberry's sheriff Andy Taylor was absolutely perfect. He put a human face on a region that too often wallowed in self-pity, obstinancy, racism and retrograde thinking. He displayed another side of the South: charm, grace, hospitality, common sense and loyalty. He brought those same qualities to his role as Matlock, the Atlanta lawyer.

I am back in the Deep South now looking after family and this news sounds like a death in the family. I'm sure many Southerners--black and white--will feel the same sense of loss. I'll try to catch that Matlock marathon tomorrow and muse on Griffith and his depiction of Southern life. By the way, if you get a chance, listen to Griffith's zany monologue called "What It Was, Was Football." You'll be in stitches.

I grew up not all that far from Andy's hometown...and the town that was basically the model for Mayberry. While those days are long gone (maybe never really exsted) watching the old reruns takes me back to being a kid and living in rural NC. It does seem to capture the style of post war, small town life in rural America, whether the South, Mid-west, or New England.

What a good, honest, wholesome man he was! A true role model for everyone.
