I am fond of the Human Development Index, which incorporates factors such as infant mortality and disparity between the rich and the poor. The US is not at the top of the heap, chiefly because of wealth disparity. According to the HDI, the three countries on the top of the heap are Norway, Australia, and the Netherlands. Dark blue: top fourth quartile.
