    @zeb

is that new light as in worshipping of the sun ? Is that the same sun that gives us our daily bread and comes in clouds ? Is that the same light that is good and bad is evil ?

    Great Article!

I tried to have a LOGICAL conversation with a sister once about these two words below and the definitions:

Acknowledge: show awareness of something: to respond to something such as a greeting or message to show it has been noticed or received

Celebrate: to observe (a day) or commemorate (an event) with ceremonies or festivities

I asked her if acknowledging a person’s day of birth is the same as celebrating it? Of course, she went into the blah-blah-blah rhetoric. These two words are vastly different. But, it’s like you are supposed to TOTALLY IGNORE that the person was born that day, that even breathing a word about it was displeasing to Jehovah! WOW! Needless to say, she stopped speaking to me after that because I guess I was “spiritually weak” for thinking out of the WT BOX. My soon to be ex has the same mindset and every year I would wish him a “Happy Birthday” just to watch him flip out!

I for one never got involved with celebrating birthdays but I would always acknowledge a person’s day of birth openly. Frankly the way I see it is that I am grateful that the person was here, born ON THAT DAY, and in my life and I wanted to acknowledge that. Even my die hard JW mom, would call me on my Bday and acknowledge it!

While for me celebrating makes me uncomfy...too much attention on me...LOL!!! know that when I turned 40 I totally "celebrated" the milestone in my own way...approaching 50 things may change... I may just go all out!!!

Excellent logical article - we all know it's bunkem but this ruins all their so called arguments on their own terms.

Small typo - remove the 2nd "are".

Are never are spoken of favorably in the Bible

This type of thinking is valuable for those who are questioning the WT already.

Unfortunately, for loyal JWs, reasoning from the scriptures is just window dressing.

The real reason JWs think celebrating birthdays is evil is because the GB says so, not because of anything the Bible says.

If the GB announced "new light" on birthdays today, JWs would happily start celebrating them and quickly forget that they ever thought otherwise.

Similarly, if the GB announced that wedding rings are evil because of pagan connections, most JWs would immediately throw theirs away.

Technically, you only have one birthday which is the actual day that you were born. All the other "birthdays" are anniversaries of your birth.

    1. JW celebrate wedding anniversaries.

    2. JW celebrate anniversary of Jesus' death aka Memorial.

    3. So what if it's pagan? Many JW still follow pagan customs for weddings and for life in general.

    4. Just because it isn't mentioned in the bible doesn't mean that it didn't happen. Maybe celebrating birthdays was such an everyday thing that it wasn't necessary to document it.

I remember when I turned 16, I just knew my mother was going to do something special. I wasn't expecting a party, just a mother/daughter lunch or something because, y'know, 16 is a special age to be. Nope, nada, nothing. I was hurt. I mean, no acknowlegement at all.

After reading the Satanic bible by LaVey, I decided to celebrate / acknowledge birthdays.
