I am among the people who love mathematics. It can be argued that pure mathematics is the only non-subjective form of knowledge.

Most people who are not good at math just don't bother, or say that they dislike the subject. So I'd just like to give big respect to BotR for not having a good math education but having the desire to know more.

Often the subject becomes more exciting when applied to something you enjoy or find interesting in iteself. For example I am fascinated by probability, and as a consequence I find the game of poker to be a great outlet for my brain to sort out these concepts. I am not a gambler per se. I don't buy lottery tickets (mostly because I do understand probability well enough), but I find poker helps to keep my mind quite engaged in continuing to assess probability from various angles. As a result I find that many of the concepts translate well into other decision making situations in life.

My point is that the branches of mathementics are so numerous it's good to find something that peaks your interest. I like all math in principle, but some subjects are more interesting than others. Equations to me are interesting, but I can't see myself spending a lot of time on them. However a study of Alan Turing's work and how binary numbers can demonstrates the ultimate limits of AI and consciousness just helps me appreciate what an amazing world we live in.

Girls can't do math or science is the biggest load of hogwash I ever heard.

I'm a girl, doing a Med Science degree, High Distinction in Physics and on the way to one in Statistics. Currently on a D average, aiming for a HD average next semester in Math-Algebra, Chem, Physics and Bio.

I was lucky to have a great high school math teacher who taught us to appreciate the beauty in it.

I once tried dividing 'i' (square root of -1) by zero and kept hearing voices in the night.

    Don't mess with that sh*t.

I love applied mathematics, such as in physics. It is a language that describes the everyday effects we see.

Accounting math is boring, however. It's about balancing checkbooks and what not, but at least it is practical and useful for everyday life.

Every once in a while, I try to do mental math, but I'm just not that good at it. Give me a pen and paper, and I can figure out most any equation (with logic; that's more my strong suit).

Quendi! I knew there was something about you. You have fulfilled one of my childhood dreams, to study math. And good on ya, BOTR - it's all about the concepts, and we are never too old to learn ...

Thanks for the book refs from all posters; bookmarking this thread.

    flamegrilled, this:

    yes, yes! me, too.

I propose the probability of INTP types to be higher than average on this thread, but not exclusively :)

The universe is based on mathmatics. Simple fact - the movement of celestrial bodies are not random or unknown - they are mathmatical, and we have the equations for it.

If mathmatics is beyond you... so is everything in the universe.

PS: Physics and mathmatics are easy - we have laws and proofs for that. Death is the hardest concept for humans to come to grips with. Your brain is full of neurons, and once that dies that's it. :P

Hint - Do you feel that math is not 'beyond' most folks' comprehension? It's my contention that our 'one-size-fits-all', large classroom size, methods of teaching are at fault for this problem. When tutoring a few kids that were failing in high school math, I found that presentation of the concepts was most important. Once they had their lightbulb moment, it was clear sailing.

Quendi - what is your field?

I love pure math, especially number theory, it's fascinating and beautiful
