It is a remarkable accomplishment.
I think we were all holding our breath and hoping for the best.

I traveled to Mars many times as a boy- using just my imagination--- I read every science fiction book I could in grade school. I will be following the reports from NASA closely- bravo on a successful landing.

I think we were all holding our breath and hoping for the best.
Especially with such a Rube Goldberg landing sequence.
Aeroshell. Chutes. Thrusters. Sky crane.
Hopefully this built up expertise for future missions.

This is the stuff science fiction is made of. What a feat; a rover on the Red Planet.

I'm loving my mountains in this part of the world. This summer I've stared at the strata (here they go 80 degree angles, 45 degrees, or do a complete u-bend) and wondered at the history they hold. I am literally looking at millions of years of history. Limestone means shellfish. Sandstone, well you can guess that one. Shale - glorified mud. Coal, forests of green stuff once. These layers tell stories.
With this new awareness, I have appreciation for the spot they put the Curiosity down. It will be counting the strata of that mountain - and their contents - reading like a book if you will, the history of Mars.
