I agree, but these problems are all about retaliation and not reconciliation.
If we learned to take the higher ground and ignore the spitefulness and mischief, even if we are maligned, it would surely dissipate this sort of melange.
This place tires me so much. It is like having a quiet voice in Honk Kong.

No. I have close friends who have, and also Annapurna, a much harder climb than Everest.
I have been to 6,900, but have never achieved any of the 8,000 metre peaks. I was busy Pioneering when I should have been mountaineering....lol

Just for the record, NYT is the ONLY person that I have open disdain for in this community. Some others (not ANY of you) may not be my personal fave, but I don't have to live with 'em, LOL!

I spoke with Anatoli Boukreev a short while before he died on Annapurna, between that 1996 expedition that killed Rob Hall and a number of other climbers. God what a misery that was.
He was an extraordinary climber, topped Everest without gas six times at least. Poor fellow got a bad rap from Jon Krakauer but he was an athlete beyond compare. As he said, "You climb that high, expect the horror".

The way I see it, anybody who tries to humiliate a person because of how they look, as opposed to what they are, deserves all the opposition that they get.
It is a cheap, and crass way of trying to validate ones own sense of self-worth.
NYT will get no mercy from me until he apologizes to the people that he has hurt by doing exactly this onerous thing.

My best girlfriend is an accomplished climber--but her ex-husband (John) is the tops.
He's done five first ascents on El Cap here in Yosemite, and I wish to God I could think of John's good buddy's name--I'm sure you'd know him. Very well known in the climbing world. Been featured on TV several times, here in the US we have the OLN (Outdoor Life Network).
I have only been climbing with her three times, since I am a total beginner we stayed with 5.6 stuff, I think she said. I am a total poser now cause I know how to be on belay. (sp)

I have read Krakouers book "into thin air" numerous times.
Extreme climbing is something that has always interested me.
I read a book about the major climbing expeditions in Yosemite called "The vertical world of Yosemite" . It was great. The book was a compilation of magazine articles and interviews with the major climbers of the time. The wars and disagrrements between the individuals regarding "purity" of ascent. Minimal use of pitons, and such like was very interesting.
Myself, the only extreme sport I have engaged in has been in kayaks on major white water rivers.
