Rbih, if this is what you understand after reading my post I don’t think there is any point in me trying to explain anything else, so I will drop the subject now. Take care.

It is a funny dynamic when a poster hops on and smashes our pagan ancestors while crying about how we view the bible.
There is a special set of rules one must follow when dealing with fragile egos.
1. It is perfectly fine to bash and disrespect Pagans, but respect must be shown for the more fragile Christian believers. (not all Christians are fragile, I'm speaking in specifics here).
2. It is perfectly fine to not only bring up past Pagan atrocities, but to exaggerate them, but past Christian atrocities are off limits and simple little mistakes.
3. While we can compare all Pagans to temple prostitutes, it is improper to compare all Christians to crusaders and slave holders.
4. While Pagan people are still responsible for the wrongs of their ancestors, living Christians are absolved of their own past.
5. It is acceptable to call Pagans inferior and Christians superior but the reverse is never acceptable.
It's kind of cute actually.

Tec, I was being serious. I hope you don't think less of me now that I am not a proponent of "enlightenment" thought. Imagine the horror of non-enlightened people in our day. The application of Newton to the social order is not only anti-Christian, it is irrational. It has failed miserably, dwarfing the shortcomings of the Church over the last 2,000 years. Political correctness, liberalism has failed since at least the French Revolution.

The Catholic Church is no angel, but it has more or less carried out the will of God, has it not? Give God a break. He is forced to deal with imperfect people.
Since you were being serious, allow me to address your comment.
WHOA! Since I don't believe in a god, I will have to go with your definition of who this god is what its will is. Uhm---not a very nice guy at all if you claim the church has more or less carried out its will.

Nc, this specific analysis is too challenging for me in a cute sort of way. Take care.

NewChapter, it is easy to make armchair critiques of the Christian God and his relationship with men. But it is quite another thing to suggest a better alternative or give God advice on how He could have done things better. Any suggestions?
Who says God was to bring utopia to this world? Obviously, according to the Bible, it wasn't part of the test. It would have nullified the test and, more importantly, free will. So, in the meantime, God must make due with what he has: an imperfect and highly rebellious creation.

So Prognoser, since I mistook your meaning...
Are you suggesting that God okay'd torture, burnings at the stake, executions, etc... all in His name? Do you think He was behind that, or do you think that was people going ahead and doing their own thing... NOT listening to Him, or to His Son.
Peace,
tammy

Okay, Prog, let's assume there is a god for the sake of this discussion.
So let's agree on the qualities of this god.
Power---limitless. He can see into hearts and minds even to the point of DNA. He can judge motivations and even see future behavior.
Now if the claim that the Catholic Church is the one true church and the pope is this god's representative on earth is accurate, I will go from there.
Popes. Have you checked them out? There were some dreadful ones, that represented this god on earth and were in charge of the one true church. Now why would an all powerful god allow this to happen? He doesn't always allow it to happen. He killed a couple of priests for eating the wrong cuts of meat. He killed some random guy for touching the ark of the covenant, even though the guy was motivated by a desire to protect it. He swallowed up disobedient followers in an earthquake. He split a kingdom up for idolatry and disobedience.
So why does he passively sit by while his representatives approve genocide, slavery, witch burnings, inquistions, crusades, rape, war etc? Why is he so impotent in more modern times? So how would I advise this god? I'd say, "God. There are a lot of people on the earth. They are all imperfect, but the ones chosen to represent you should be cut from some finer cloth. Of allllllll these people you have to choose from, why do you choose the monsters to mislead your people and teach a perverted form of your purpose? In all your power and wisdom, can you not find a better person? And if you can't find a better person, what does that say of the religion they were raised in? Is such a religion completely incapable of producing even ONE decent person to carry out your will? Just ONE? And if not, why are we bothering with you at all?"
