    IslandWoman,

If I should say to a Muslim that I think Allah is a baby killing false god who fucks innocent people, but then I turn around and say to my fellow posters it is wrong to use the word "fuck" when speaking to other posters, then I am a hypocrite.

You're missing something here: an "insider" can revile flaws or defects in his religion or culture -- in fact even make remarks that would be considered bigotry coming from "outsiders." We XJWs know what a tyrant the WTS makes god out to be. We once fell for that particular line of bull, and we've earned the right to protest -- haven't we?

So how does our right to protest give us the right to spit in other humans' faces, metaphorically speaking?

    IW,

I agree that it is hypocritical if it's ok to insult a person't God, but it's not ok to insult the person.

As someone who still believes in God, I have read many insulting terms on this board directed at Him. To read these terms insults me, and does not endear me any more to the person insulting my God.

However, I have remained silent on the issue, and do not return evil for evil. Because I believe that the God I believe in can see who are saying these things, and he knows their heart condition more than me, so their accountability is with Him, not me.

On the other hand, if they insult me, then it is my call as to how I respond. Because this time they have insulted me, not Him.

I believe in respecting people's choice of view. If people are atheists, then I respect that. I have never insulted anyone on this board for being an atheist. Likewise, I expect atheists to respect my views.

If I can respect their beliefs, why can't they respect mine?

Prisca....excellent post and my feelings also

Francois..Quote "I agree with the idea that if you have an emotional reaction to a word, then it's your problem - not mine"

I find this hard to believe coming from a guy with your brains!
Basically you are saying...I don't CARE if I hurt someone or make them mad.

Would you tell your boss.....hey boss..why don't you go f--- off!
Then when he gets mad you say....that's his problem, not mine.
If feel your theory is rude dude...and inconsiderate.

Go tell a fat person....hey you fat pig! Then when they get hurt just say...that's your problem , not mine.

Real good advise to all here!

God is not as sensitive as we are.

Remember, God said, The taking of offense lies in the belly of the stupid one, or words to that affect.

I believe (perhaps erroneously) that I can insult your views but not insult you.

Of course these are fuzzy lines because they all depend on definitions. Like what is a "person"? Is a "person" equal to the sum of their views? some might believe that definition I don't - hence the reason I feel I can freely express myself on peoples views.

So when I say something like I did in the thread about the "coming of the lord" that may be something you don't like but its not directed at YOU or meant to belittle YOU.

Otherwise, people who have views that sinners are going to be destroyed because they are evil....using that logic I could come up with an equal argument that they are insulting me because they have a particular opposing view. It is possible to attack (ok strong word so let's say "come into conflict with") each others ideas and opinions...but NOT attack the other person. This is one of the differences between idea differences and name calling. Name calling is personal but "idea wars" are part of growth...challenge your ideas and grow.

If it gets to the point that we cannot go after ideas (any ideas - including the idea of God) then this place will be rid of me (and you can all have a party).

    Hey guys,

I understand the need to respect other people's god. It is a very sensitive subject. One thing you have to remember is that this is an EX-JW site. There are many here who after a lifetime of programming have just begun to question things. They can't stop with just the Borg. They need to question everything in order to come to a firm grip on what they believe is reality. In the process, many lose the ability to believe in God. What you see as insults to your God are really the individual reaffirming thier own beliefs in their own head. That's the beauty of this discussion board. Here you can do that. If a person can't handle that, and I can understand that it could be very difficult to stomach for someone who still believes in God, maybe they should go to a site with more "Christians". I believe there are a few out there. Please don't mistake that last bit as a take it or leave it attitude. It's just that there needs to be a place for people to come and question everything. I'm glad there is and I'm glad this is it.

Exactly TR. If it's OK to call somebody's god a name, why is it wrong to call a fellow poster a name? Free speech should be practiced across the board!

IW perhaps you should start your own website and invite everyone over to call each other names. Then you get to make the rules.

I'm amazed now people can get worked up over this non issue.

    IT'S SIMON'S BOARD

So since we are in his house, maybe we need to quit whining???
